States of Matter and Phase Changes “I’m melting….”

Matter Matter is all around us! Solids Liquids Gase s Plasma

Matter Matter can be found in one of four states of matter – sometimes called phases of matter. Can you name them? Solid Gas Liquid Plasma

Matter - Solids Solids Rock! “Solid as a rock” Solids have a definite shape Solids have a definite volume Molecules are tightly packed

Matter - Liquids Liquids Splash! Liquids can be poured Liquids have a definite volume Liquids take the shape of their container Molecules can slide past each other- they “mingle”

Matter - Gases Gases are Airy! Gases take the shape of their container Gases have no definite volume Gases can be compressed Molecules move rapidly and are far apart

Matter - Plasma Plasma is stellar! Plasma is the most common state of matter in the universe Found in stars, Northern Lights, neon signs, and lightning

Matter - Plasma Plasma is stellar! Plasma has some properties similar to gas: -No definite shape -No definite volume But plasma is very different: -It consists of charged particles -It can conduct electricity -May form filaments under the influence of a magnetic field

States of Matter Let’s compare the three common states of matter. Solids Liquids Gases Definite shape Definite volume Molecules do not move Very little kinetic energy No definite shape Definite volume Molecules slide past each other More kinetic energy than solids No definite shape No definite volume Molecules move quickly and freely Lots of kinetic energy – much more than liquids

Matter How do we get from a solid to a liquid? Or from a gas to a liquid? How does matter change from one state, or phase to another?

To Change Phase… Add Heat Or Remove Heat

Changing Phase SolidLiquidGas Add Heat Remove Heat MeltingEvaporation CondensationFreezing Molecular Motion speeds up when you add heat! Molecular motion slows down when heat is removed

To Sum It Up… Matter can occur in different phases, or states Matter can change phases by adding or removing heat Solid Liquid Gas Plasma

Complete the vocabulary worksheet for homework. It is on my desk. There will be a quiz on this material next class, so be sure to be prepared.
