Background Faced with the severity of air pollution in China, government departments are planning to formulate even stricter regulations whilst actively promoting the improvement of the structure of oil products. After being postponed twice, the China IV emission standards for diesel engines were officially implemented on December 31, 2014. While technology for the traditional power engine is continuing to progress, we are also seeing the rapid development of new technologies such as natural gas engines, methanol engines, and electric hybrid engines. In recent years, smog has become a problemfrequently plaguing the entire country, posing an increasing threat to people’s health and gaining even greater attention from governmental bodies. An analysis of data shows that automobile exhaust emissions are one of the key culprits, with diesel engines taking the top spot for emission pollution.

4. Background In 2014, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People’s Republic of China Notice No. 27. The notice announced that from December 31, 2014, the China III emissions standards for diesel vehicles would be abolished and that products complying with China III standards would not be permitted for sale starting January 1, 2015. The announcementhas had a direct effect on automobile, engine, and parts enterprises thatwillnow have to put even greater effort into product and technological development. This includes developing alternative fuel options like natural gas and methanol engines, as well as perfecting traditional internal combustion engine technologies such as high pressure common rail andexhaust aftertreatment technology, as well as miniaturization, and increasing combustion efficiency, in order to ensure theirsafety in the increasingly competitive market.
