College Writing Oct. 28 th, 2014 SWBAT research a book or movie that they can analyze from a feminist perspective Oct. 28 th, 2014 SWBAT research a book or movie that they can analyze from a feminist perspective

Your Paper After much debate….Let us hone in on one story / movie …unless you want to speak about a genre or group of characters. (Example: Disney Princesses / Superhero women / Women in combat video games) You will research the film / piece of literature and quote from other writers, as well as providing examples within the story. (You may use Cinderella or The Yellow Wallpaper.) Your prompt is: How are women represented in your story?

Research and Outline Today, start brainstorming how the film / story represents women. It may be positive representation. How are women represented in the story? Intro and Thesis At least three body paragraphs with topic sentences (you speak about new issues within your thesis) Conclusion Today…research the story, think about the different ways in which women are represented in your piece, start looking at what others have said about this book/short story/ film. Formulate a main idea you are going to write about and start making an outline for yourself. Outlines will be due on Monday.

Example of a Thesis While the television series Breaking Bad appears to have strong female characters, a closer look reveals women who are at the mercy of men to keep their lives stable.

Another Thesis The movie Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory portrays the majority of female characters as irrational beings only out to protect themselves and their offspring.

Can I support my thesis? Ask yourself….Can I support my thesis? Can I prove my point? Do I have enough information I can think of on my own and research that will support this claim?

Willy Wonka The movie Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory portrays the majority of female characters as irrational beings only out to protect themselves and their offspring. Body Paragraph One – The stereotype of girls obsessing over superficial details to live a happy life is represented by the character of Veruca Salt. …..In this paragraph, mention how the male protagonist and his grandfather value familial love over items such as mink jackets and prizes.

Willy Wonka The movie Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory portrays the majority of female characters as irrational beings only out to protect themselves and their offspring. Body Paragraph Two – While the men in the film help to protect their children, it is the women who go to extreme and bizarre lengths as saviors, no matter how morally corrupt their offspring are. In other words, the story shows women to regress into stereotypical “Mama Bears”, ready to protect their “cubs” from any harm, without truly assessing the situation. Mention here too that Willie Wonka’s grandfather understands when Charlie has messed up and first rationally tries to argue his case with Mr. Wonka.

Outline Fill out your outline. See that you can make a case. Does your movie / book / story show women to be dependent on men? Ok, then give me three strong reasons why. 1. They are financially dependent. 2. They have men in control of their physical being. 3. They have men who are psychologically talking them out of living a fulfilling life where they can develop into a well-rounded person. Fill out your outline. See that you can make a case.
