www.balticbiogasbus.eu1 Next steps in the Baltic Biogas Bus project for period 2013-2014: Extending a successful partnership Geert Schaap (geert.schaap@sweco.se) project coordinator extension Smart Cities conference, 5 November 2014

Baltic Biogas Bus results 2009-2012 are main drivers for the extension The Baltic Biogas Bus project generated strategies to introduce biogas as well as analysis on necessary measures in biogas production, distribution and bus operations In the project investments were planned in a transnational cooperation process During the first stage project the energy efficiency of biogas buses and the upgrading of biogas to fuel quality were identified as the main breaking points in discussions with cities on introduction of biogas buses. www.balticbiogasbus.eu 2

Aims of the extension 2013-2014 More Baltic Biogas Bus is the second stage in which key investments will be made and evaluated by the whole partnership. The objective is to demonstrate the business case of biogas buses in a pan-Baltic network through concrete investments in biogas fuel production and its use in buses. This extension stage will showcase best available technologies on bus performance and biogas upgrading

Main share of the budget is used for 3 investments Eco-driving system and training, to raise fuel efficiency of biogas buses in several countries Develop serial hybrid electric biogas buses Mobile biogas upgrading facility, adapted for Niepolomice in Poland and transferable to other cities in Europe The social, economic and environmental benefits will be weighed against the costs.

Van Hool biogas-electric serial hybrid bus arrives at Skyss in Bergen Norway 17 October 2014 www.balticbiogasbus.eu 5

Solaris electric- biogas hybrid bus of Västerås public transport company at the Public Transport exhibition in Stockholm, 28 October 2014 www.balticbiogasbus.eu 6

Learning together and knowledge dissemination We want more organisations to make similar investments, therefore we involve partners, politicians and decision makers from start to finish. Decision makers will be able to discuss biogas bus use with peers during international events, study visits and transnational politicians´ bus trips. All partners will be involved during preparation, procurement, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of investments. Exchange between experts improves quality. Socio-environmental-economic analysis will present the costs and benefits of the investments for experts and decision makers. Final report will present the evaluation of the investments. That report will be fitted into the national context in each partner country: how the results of the final report fit within the developments on clean buses in each country.

10 partners VL Västerås Lokaltrafik, Sweden: invests in hybrid biogas bus Biogas Öst, Sweden: overarching responsibility for eco drive activities and will coordinate communication and information. Skyss, Norway: invests in hybrid biogas buses and eco-driving systems. HOG Energi, Norway: coordinates Work package biogas bus energy efficiency and hybrid biogas-electricity buses. Motor Transport Institute of Poland: invests in a mobile biogas upgrading system and test eco-drive system. JSC Kauno Autobusai, Lithuania: tests eco-driving and wants to learn how to upgrade biogas and the benefits of hybrid buses. Riga city, Latvia; Tartu city, Estonia and ATI-erc, Germany : participate in analyses and evaluation of eco-driving, hybrid buses and biogas upgrading and join the politician exchange bus trips.

Time plan and budget Start 12 June 2013 – End 11 January 2015 The total budget is 3,2 million Euros. EU partners: 1,6 million Euros, of which 80% is funded by EUs ERDF budget. The major share is used for investments in a hybrid biogas bus and a mobile upgrading system in Poland. Norwegian partners: 1,6 million Euros, of which 50% is funded by Norwegian funds. The major share is used for investments in hybrid biogas buses of which Skyss finances 50% itself.
