5 Reading Strategies  Most second graders are no longer learning how to read. They are reading to learn and share information. Literal Comprehension Inferential Comprehension & Critical thinking

6 Reading vs. Understanding Reading Fluency  Reading the words or sounding them out accurately  Appropriate reading speed  Expression Reading Comprehension  Literal understanding- citing text evidence  Inferential-drawing conclusions, thinking about why something happened  Critical thinking- making text connections, asking What if…, How is this like…

7 Technology in our Classroom  I-ready diagnostic and practice online  Computer instruction 1 hour a week  Access to netbooks, iPad®s and classroom computers for all subject areas  Integrated projects with Mrs. Constantino

8 STEM Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics  Math, Science and Technology  Second Graders will be creating their own pollinators in the fourth quarter after an informative trip to Longwood Gardens!

9 Second Grade Special Activities:  Follow Flat Stanley throughout the Year  Celebrate Famous Authors/Characters Birthdays  Celebrate Special Days and Holidays

10 21 st Century Giving Without Walls  Objective: Students will evaluate the need for preservation of a local species and plan a course of action.  Applying to 21 st Century  leadership; service project; personal reflections  Project: to be determined

11 Creating a class of thinkers  Ask three before me  What do you think you should do?  “Perfect is the enemy of done.”  “Being right keeps you in place. Being wrong forces you to explore.”  Encourage yourself and your child to explore “out of the box”.
