3 Acceptable Use Policy Purpose Parents must ensure that their child demonstrates a legal, ethical and responsible use of technology Clearly defined in Section IV of the Student Code of Conduct Booklet

4 Acceptable Use Policy Rights Students have a right to use technology to increase access to information and resources for educational purposes Students have a right to use technology without the fear their products or reputation will be violated, destroyed, or stolen

5 Acceptable Use Policy Responsibilities Students have a responsibility to recognize the difference between a proper and improper use of technology Students have a responsibility to use all technology in a responsible, professional, fair, and legal manner

10 Instructional Strategies Teachers are required to circulate the room while students use school technology Teachers are required to give specific instructions prior to all Internet activities

16 Code of Ethics for Computer Network and Online Telecommunications Users Any use resulting in illegal, inappropriate, obscene, or pornographic purposes are prohibited Use of offensive speech, profanity, or obscene language is not permitted

17 Code of Ethics for Computer Network and Online Telecommunications Users Hate mail, harassment, discriminatory remarks, are not permitted Users shall not spread computer viruses, vandalize or infiltrate systems, or damage hardware or software ▫These actions will be viewed as criminal activity in accordance with state and federal law

20 Purpose of Copyright Law Is to protect the authors or creators, and also to promote the progress of knowledge The authority to establish Copyright Law comes from the US Constitution ▫Article 1, Section 8

21 What Is Copyright? Copyright is protection provided by law to the authors or creators under title 17 Copyright is offered for all original works when they are created ▫Whether they are published or unpublished

22 Unprotected Materials The Copyright has expired It is donated to the public Has not been notated or recorded ▫such as spontaneous dances or speeches Any titles, names, short phrases, slogans, lettering, or coloring Any Ideas, procedures, concepts, or discoveries

23 Fair Use Allows limited use of copyrighted material without permission from the owner ▫Must be used for educational purposes Need 4 factors to qualify for Fair Use: 1.The purpose of the use 2.The nature of the copyrighted work 3.The amount intended to be used 4.The effect of the use on the market

24 Purpose of the Use Proposed use is for nonprofit and educational ▫Not for commercial use Nature of the Copyrighted Work If the work used is factual not a creative expression ▫Does not apply to works such as standardized tests or workbooks

25 Amount of the Portion Used The quality and quantity of the portion taken ▫The more of the original taken, the less likely it follows Fair Use Effect of the Use on the Market If the use is unlikely to be widespread or used to negatively affect the market
