2 Role of Portfolio The portfolio is: The primary documentary evidence used for tenure review and promotions in rank Used by all tenure and promotion review committees as foundation of their deliberations 2

3 Learning Objectives: Describe the format of a portfolio in the Faculty Evaluation System Review the portfolio evaluation rubric Provide helpful hints for submitting a portfolio Discuss the role of the rank and promotion committee Review deadlines 3

4 Standard Organization & Presentation of the Portfolio Includes: All five categories of evaluation Must always document Satisfactory Standards of Employment…. And achievements in additional categories as required by each rank 4

9 Teaching & Learning Philosophy Statement Opportunity for faculty to describe: o who they are as educators o what they believe about themselves, their disciplines, their students, o how these things are exemplified in their practice. Both inspirational and practical 9

11 The narrative summary… …. serves to highlight important contributions faculty members have made in each of the categories 11

12 The narrative summary…. …….provides an opportunity for faculty to reflect on their growth as a faculty on the activities they have undertaken and feedback they have received in the years covered by the portfolio 12

13 The narrative summary… ….provides an opportunity for faculty to explain how they have met the expectations for tenure or promotion. 13

14 Documentation Should be supportive of the narrative summary for the category Provides evidence that faculty have met the expectations for tenure and promotion Refers to FPE plan and report 14

15 Portfolio Evaluation Rubric Discussion of expectations. (Please refer to rubric handout.) Committee recommendation submitted to Dean and Provost o 3 out of 4 “yes” votes required Final decision made by Provost 15

16 Committee Composition Four members o Associate Dean o Department Head/Program Director If candidate is DH/PD, then DH/PD in closely related department o Faculty member in department If none available, in closely related department. Candidate chooses. o Faculty member from college-wide cohort. AD chooses. 16

17 Submission Process Can be electronic…. But for convenience, hard copy will be easiest 17

18 Decision-Making Process* Review of the Faculty Performance Evaluation Plan/Report Review of Portfolios *refer to pages 16 & 17 in MOU, Faculty Evaluation System Faculty member creates FPE Plan Plan is reviewed by DH/PD. Once approved… …it goes to the appropriate Associate Dean for Hiring and Evaluation for approval Faculty member assembles portfolio Portfolio is reviewed by committee (including DH/PD) Portfolio is reviewed by the appropriate Dean Portfolio is reviewed by the Provost who makes the final decision

19 Faculty Evaluation System 2013-2014 Calendar Winter Semester 2014 April 4 th Faculty submit Portfolio if applying for rank and tenure – Rank and Tenure committees begin reviews Faculty Performance Evaluation (FPE) Reports are due for all faculty April 18 th Rank and Tenure committee’s submit recommendations to Dean April 25 th Dean’s recommendations completed on rank and tenure applications May 2 nd Provost’s decisions completed on rank and tenure applications January 27 th through April 14 th Classroom observation must be completed during this time 2 June 13 th Faculty will be notified of decisions regarding merit and merit midpoint 19
