3 AgeingWell Presentation AgeingWell Thematic Network Grant Agreement: 297298 The Challenge CIP-PSP Objective 3.1 ICT and Ageing Network Challenge 1: There are major initiatives underway at European and national level, but they are currently still largely working in isolation – Integration; Challenge 2: The objective is to bring together the key national or regional initiatives in the field of ICT for Ageing Well in order to develop guidelines for deployment of such ICT & Ageing Well solutions, share good practice and disseminate information to all the stakeholders across Europe – Networking; Challenge 3: A strengthened dialogue with the investment community can be ensured by consolidating and sharing information as well as developing common approaches on measurements of socio-economic impact and combined evidence of impact from "Ageing Well" solutions – Linking; Challenge 4: The network shall ensure that a reliable information base is established, which can offer access to relevant information about current activities and results emerging from across Europe – Sharing. 3

4 AgeingWell Presentation AgeingWell Thematic Network Grant Agreement: 297298 CIP-PSP Thematic Network - Rationale  The goal of Thematic networks is to bring together relevant stakeholders, expertise and facilities to support the implementation of Information Society policies using ICT.  The work of the Thematic Networks should be focused on develop new policy implementation schemes through working groups, workshops and exchanges of good practices. Examples: preparation of future pilot activities, replication of innovative solutions, development of common cross border strategies, etc.  The expected outcomes of Thematic Networks must be clearly defined and measurable, and the results shall be in the public domain.  Proposals will be evaluated against the published evaluation criteria. One or more proposals will be selected on quality for each Thematic Network defined in the work programme.  It is expected that after this period the network is sustainable and continues to operate without Union funding. 4

5 AgeingWell Presentation AgeingWell Thematic Network Grant Agreement: 297298 Ageing & Health Context By 2050, the number of people in the EU aged 65 and above is expected to grow by 70% and the number of people aged over 80 by 170%. This raises important challenges for the 21st century: meet the higher demand for healthcare; adapt health systems to the needs of an ageing population while keeping them sustainable in societies with smaller workforce. The European population is ageing rapidly, but living longer does not necessarily mean living a healthier, more active and independent life. Life expectancy (LE) 2008-2060Life expectancy vs. Healthy Life years (2010) 5

6 AgeingWell Presentation AgeingWell Thematic Network Grant Agreement: 297298 ICT is the trigger for the ‘Positive Ageing’ approach to strategy development seeks to ensure that the focus is on the positive aspects of ageing rather than presenting longevity increases as a burden and a threat. ICT Solutions address daily and independent living such as:  Social communication: easy access to phone and video conversation, etc.;  Daily shopping, travel, social life, public services: easy access over the internet to order goods and services online;  Safety: making sure entrance doors and windows are locked/closed when leaving the house or sleeping; checking for water or gas leaks; lighting systems, etc,;  Reminders: Taking medication, fulfulling household tasks;  User-friendly interfaces (for all sorts of equipment in the home and outside, taking into account that many elderly people have impairments in vision, hearing, mobility, etc.  Telecare and telemedicine with new opportunities for providing medical care at home  Personal health systems include wearable and portable systems for monitoring and diagnosis, fall prevention, therapy, among others;  Support for people with cognitive problems and their carers to stay at home for longer and remain active for as long as possible. 6
