Instructions: A) On a clean sheet of paper, write your heading in the top/right corner (First/Last name, then the date, and then the class period.) B) Number your paper from 1 to 10 C) Go get a copy of today's bell work assignment from the table in the front of the room.  PLEASE DO NOT WRITE ON THIS DOCUMENT D) Read each question carefully, and select the best answer. E) With a capital letter, write each answer on your own paper. F) When you are finished, way silently for further instructions Bell Work SPI 0807.Inq.1 (Variables and Controls) Aug 21, 2013 Press the Right Arrow Button to Advance through the Presentation!

Today’s Plan 1) Discuss objective(s), bell work, and birthdays. 2) Explain how to use the CPS clickers 3) Continue collecting duct tape/giving out text books 4) Give out Jupiter grade book passwords 5) View and discuss PP notes presentation about controls 6) (Time Permitting) Watch video clip (song) about variables Link: Variable Video SongVariable Video Song Copy this into your agenda! Get school supplies! 0.5 SPI 0807.Inq.1 (Variables and Controls)

Today’s Plan Silly Thought 03 All here who believe in telekinesis… …raise my hand now! 0.5 SPI 0807.Inq.1 (Variables and Controls)

Notes SPI 0807.Inq.1 (Variables and Controls) Variables and Controls in Experiments  Both of these are key parts of the scientific method Scientific Method (In Flow Chart Format)  Use variables and controls when you test your hypothesis by doing experiments Experiments!

Main Experiment  Your main experiment will include…  The purpose of this experiment is to measure ONE key thing in multiple trials Control Experiment An experiment to verify the results of your main experiment using the same conditions except for one factor or variable Notes SPI 0807.Inq.1 (Variables and Controls) Two Types of Experiments (1) Main Experiment (2) Control Experiment independent variables, dependent variables, and constants Sometimes called experimental group Sometimes called control group

What Are Control Experiments?  An experiment to verify the results of another experiment using the same conditions except for one factor or variable  An experiment separated from the main experiment where the independent variable being tested cannot influence the results.  Simply remove the independent variable entirely or replace it with a neutral independent variable. Notes SPI 0807.Inq.1 (Variables and Controls) Also called control groups

Example 01: A student conducts an experiment to determine which type of glue works best for attaching two pieces of paper together. Experimental Group  Uses 3 types of Elmer’s glue in a series of experiments (Liquid-washable, Glue Stick-washable, Glue Stick-nonwashable) She places the same amount of glue (2g) on each sheet of paper Control Group  Uses one types of super glue in a series of experiments She places the same amount of super glue (2g) on each sheet Review SPI 0807.Inq.1 Controls and Variables What Are Control Experiments?  An experiment to verify the results of another experiment using the same conditions except for one factor or variable  Simply remove the independent variable entirely or replace it with a neutral independent variable.

Experimental group  All the details of the series of experiments using the 3 similar types of Elmer’s glue Control group  All the details of the super glue series of experiments SPI 0807.Inq.1 Variables and Controls Notes NOTE: The super glue is the control variable!

Example 02: A student conducts an experiment to determine which type of ballpoint writing pen will last the longest before running out of ink. Experimental Group  Uses 3 types of ink pens in a series of experiments (Blue ink pen, Black ink pen, red ink pen) He copies text from his science book. He copies the same text over and over. He writes at the same speed. The room temperature remains the same. He writes on the same kind of paper. Control Group  Uses 3 types of non-ballpoint pens in a series of experiments Uses the same constants as the experimental group SPI 0807.Inq.1 Variables and Controls Review What Are Control Experiments?  An experiment to verify the results of another experiment using the same conditions except for one factor or variable  Simply remove the independent variable entirely or replace it with a neutral independent variable.

Experimental group  All the details of the series of experiments using the 3 types of ballpoint pens Control group  All the details of the 3 non-ballpoint pens NOTE: The non-ballpoint pens are the control variables! SPI 0807.Inq.1 Variables and Controls Notes
