2. Jan. 1861 South Carolina Was the first state to secede in the south. This was caused by the election of Lincoln as president. Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas also seceded after that followed by Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina. These states made up the Confederate States of America.

3. Feb. 1861 Seceded states created the Confederate Constitution, a document similar to the Union’s Constitution. Jefferson Davis was named the provisional or temporary president of the CSA.

4. Feb. 1861 When President Buchanan refused to surrender forts on southern land the southern state troops captured them

5. Mar. 4, 1861 In his Inauguration Lincoln said he has no plans to end slavery and he would not allow secession.

6. April 1861 At Fort Sumter SC troops shot at the fort because the U.S army wouldn’t surrender it. Once the troops did this the state of SC had committed treason.

7. April 1861 After the attack on Fort Sumter four more states joined the CSA. Richmond, VA became the capitol of the CSA.

8. June 20, 1863 Since the western part of Virginia did not want to secede that section of Virginia became West Virginia and joined the Union.

9. June 1861 Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, and Missouri did not secede even though they were slave states. These states were known as border states.

10. July 1861 This battle was a Confederate victory and took place in Virginia. It was also the first battle of the Civil War. This battle of Fort Sumter may have started the war, but this battle was the first of many to come in the bloody Civil War.

11. July 1861 Lincoln replaced General McDowell with General George B. McClellan because of the loss at First Battle of Bull Run. McDowellMcClellan

12. July 1861 The Union wanted to embargo or totally restrict the south from trading with the rest of the world. The Union wanted to show that you can’t secede. The Union improved their Navy to prevent the CSA from exporting their cash crop cotton. In response to this the south built small, fast ships that could outmaneuver Union ships.
