TURN IN CH.23.1 WORKSHEET Objective: SWBAT Describe reasons for going to war with Vietnam by discussing US involvement. Describe tactics used to fight the Vietcong by reading and analyzing fighting methods. Describe attitudes at home about the war by watching “1968”. Describe protest music of the sixties and seventies by listening and analyzing lyrics from different protest groups.

Minh- liked by many-called father Ho- North Vietnam --Vietminh South Vietnam = Ngo Dinh Diem – nationalist-Vietminh-National Liberation Front (NLF) Diem= dictator—refused to hold elections which angered many Vietnamese Late 1960’s—Vietminh united with South Vietnam opposed to Diem to form National Liberation Front (NLF) or Vietcong. North Vietnam = Vietminh = NLF = Vietcong South Vietnam and the US

Truman- Sent $20 million in direct military aid to the French Over next 4 years---$2.6 billion Eisenhower- Domino Theory $1 billion to South Vietnam 4 out of 5 dollars of aid spent on the military. Diem Kennedy- Tripled amount of aid Increased the number of U.S. military advisers US money goes to corrupt government officials pockets Johnson- Vietnam expands in 1964 August, 1964: Gulf of Tonkin —widens war Operation Rolling Thunder: Feb 1965—180,000 troops 1966—nearly doubled 1967—nearly 500,000

7 The War Operation Rolling Thunder
– 3 years of dropping bombs on North Vietnam. Targeted bases, roads, and railways. Along with the Ho Chi Minh trail, which was roads and muddy trails from N. Vietnam along Laos and Cambodia border to S. Vietnam.

8 The War Air War- Ground War-
Dropped more bombs on Vietnam than the Allies did during WWII. Failed because of the 30,000 miles of tunnels. Ground War- Search and destroy missions. Hard to find the enemy. Agent Orange

9 The War Vietcong- Advantages for the Vietcong US response
Guerrilla warfare- small bands to fight US; ambushes, hit and run raids, and sabotage Advantages for the Vietcong Knew the land Appealed to the peasants US response Pacification program Development projects
