The Capital and most popular city is Kingston They ship a large amount of bananas 1/3 of Jamaica’s population is under 15 A popular sport is baseball They enjoy lots of American fashion trends

5 JAMAICA WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?

6 CLIMATE AND WEATHER!! Tropical weathers make it an ideal holiday hot spot. The weather ranges from 20 to 35 degrees that’s 68 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit. In January the get 22 to 29 degrees that’s more than double than we get in Scotland !! In December when they get the coldest which is a whopping 23 to 30 degrees !!!!

7 Just school More girls go to university than boys in Jamaica.
When Jamaica became independent from Britian in 1962, they built extra schools, They taught British learning and followed their books and exams. There were now lots of people learning.

8 TORNADOES AND HURRICANES
Most tornadoes are made from severe thunder storms They can go more than 300 miles per hour Hurricane Gilbert in 1988 killed lots of people. The hurricane destroyed some places close to Jamaica and then began to spread around the Caribbean

9 SLAVERY Christopher Columbus arrived in Jamaica in 1494.
Columbus made the Arawaks (the natives to the island) work on farms in very bad conditions. Lots of people died because of overwork and starvation. In only 20 years Arawaks had all died out. Most Jamaicans descended from African slaves brought to the island to be slaves 400 years ago

10 POVERTY PEOPLE LIVE IN SLUMS BECAUSE THERE IS A HOUSING SHORTAGE AND LAND IS VERY EXPENSIVE. HOUSES IN THE POORER PART OF CITIES HAVE NO RUNNING WATER. MANY ARE FORCED TO BUILD THEIR OWN HOUSES OUT OF WOOD. THE BEST HOUSES IN KINGSTON ARE ON THE SLOPES OF THE BLUE MOUNTAINS. MOST THEM HAVE SATELIITE DISHES WHICH POOR PEOPLE CANNOT AFFORD. 1/3 OF JAMAICA’S POPULATION LIVE IN POVERTY

11 EXPORTING AND WORK Some Banana estate and sugar plantation workers are picked up by truck early in the morning to go to work. To bring a car to Jamaica is nearly the same price as a car in the UK. Free zones are where most people work and their jobs are very repetitive and boring.

12 BOB MARLEY Bob Marley was born in 1945, Jamaica. He is a famous reggae singer. He died in 1981.

13 Usain Bolt Usain Bolt About him Usain was born August the 21st 1986, that would make him 28. His full name is Usain St Leo Bolt. He was born in Sherwood content and he is 1.95m. He is now a famous sprinter.
