1 Creating Your Individual Development Plan Michigan Public Purchasing Officers Association Annual Conference September 24, 2010 Rebecca G. Beard, Ph.D., C.P.M.

2 This session will help you to: Analyze your career goals and objectives Learn how to create an Individual Development Plan Find and use resources to accomplish your goals Prepare an Individual Development Plan Seek feedback

3 You will need: A copy of your current job description A copy of your resume’ One or two personal goals for the next year One or two personal goals that will take longer than a year

4 What is an IDP? A clear statement of your career goals. A map for attaining goals – both short term and long term. Individual action plan to develop specific competencies (knowledge and skills) for your present position or a future position. A written plan for managing your development.

5 Benefits of an IDP Improve your competencies (knowledge and skills) to prepare for new responsibilities. Road map to achieve your goals. Opportunity to build upon your strengths. You are making a commitment to yourself and to your future.

6 Reflection Call to mind the various positions or jobs you have held over the past 5 years. If you are in the same job, consider a longer period, or how your responsibilities have changed over time. Where have I been? Where am I now? Where can I go next?

7 Where have I been? Consider your previous training, development, and job experiences. On-the-job training Formal training Developmental assignments, and Self-development activities

8 Where am I now? Review your job description. Think about the work performed over the past year and complete the following: I am good at these parts of my job: In general, I am good at this kind of work: These managerial or technical competencies are necessary to perform my current duties:

9 Where am I now? (cont.) I need to develop or strengthen these competencies: I need these kinds of assignments or training to develop or strengthen these competencies:

10 Competencies Defined as an underlying characteristic (i.e., a motive, trait, skill, aspect of one’s self image or a body of knowledge which results in effective and/or superior job performance). Business Management Competencies: customer relations, financial management, marketing, negotiating, organizational awareness.

11 Competencies (cont.) Professional Competencies: coaching and mentoring, communication, and conflict management. HR Competencies: appeals, grievances, litigation, equal employment opportunity, and organizational development.

12 Competencies (cont.) Other Competencies: conceptual and strategic thinking, group management, judgment, analytical thinking, decision making, ethics, facilitation, interpersonal relations, problem solving, self-management, teamwork, technology applications, networking, organizational commitment, self confidence, initiative, interpersonal awareness, and group leadership.

13 Where can I go? Focus on these major areas: Positions in which you are interested Short term goals, and Long term goals

14 Checklist for Preparing an IDP 1. Identify the assignments or job duties you would like to complete this year. 2. Define your short term (1 year) goals. 3. List future activities you would like to accomplish. 4. List possible career paths open to you. 5. Define your long term (1-3 year) goals.

15 Checklist for Preparing an IDP Are your goals realistic? How strong is your desire to achieve these goals? Are your goals compatible with your strengths? Are your goals compatible with the parts of your job that you like?

17 Developmental Opportunities Cross-Training Changing functions Shift changes Working with new people Develop in Place Mentoring Individual Projects

18 Developmental Opportunities Formal Training/Development Professional Technical Leadership Executive Resources: MPPOA Scholarships, agency education and training funds, professional associations, community college, and adult education programs in your community.

19 Developmental Opportunities Off the Job Opportunities Joining/leading community groups Trying a new skill in a volunteer organization Giving presentations to civic groups

20 Developmental Opportunities Self-Development Readings/Self-study Professional organizations College programs Seminars

21 Seeking Feedback Select a trusted advisor, friend, or supervisor to discuss your IDP. Share your goals and developmental plans to obtain feedback and support. Agree to periodically meet to discuss your plan. Seek advice on any goal slippage or to revise. To discuss developmental opportunities.
