1 Our Chemistry Project

2 Aluminium Facts silvery-white chemical lightest structure
corrosion resistant, heat reflective, excellent conductor of electricity exceptional resistance to weathering and corrosion Used for storage tanks and highway signs easily recycled using less than 5% of the energy required to produced virgin aluminium it is very light

3 Properties of Aluminium
Symbol: Al Atomic number: 13 Atomic Weight: Group in period table: 111A Density at 0 degree Celsius: 2.699 Boiling point: 2467 degree Celsius Melting point: degree Celsius

4 Apparatus Aluminium Foil Test Tubes Hydrochloric Acid (dilute)
Copper Sulphate (powder form) Weighing machine Beakers Test Tubes Filter funnel Burette Stop Watches Filter Paper Distilled Water

5 kept the same Variables Variables Amount of hydrochloric acid
(5cm³, 0.5mol/dm³) Pieces of aluminium foil (1) Temperature (room temp.) changed Variables Amount of copper sulphate

6 Experiment Burette 5cm³ of HCl into the beaker and add in the aluminium foil Observation: the reaction between HCl and Al is very slow and cannot be seen. Thus, copper sulphate, (a transition metal compound) is used to speed up the process.

7 Experiment Burette 5cm³ of HCl into the beaker and add in 0.5g of copper sulphate and shake the mixture. Put in the aluminium foil into the copper sulphate solution as we start the stop watch. Observe the reaction between the metal and acid. Record the time taken for the bubbles produced to subside.

8 Experiment Observations: the aluminium foil immediately starts to decompose/rust. A hissing sound is heard due to the bubbles produced. Heat energy is also produced. The gas produced is hydrogen because Metal + Acid ---> Salt + Hydrogen

9 Results Amt. Of Copper Sulphate (g)

10 Interpretation Limitation We have discovered that
~ If we add distilled water into the mixture, it slows down the reaction process. ~ If the amount of HCl increases, the reaction process is speeded up. Limitation We have found out that the limiting factor for this experiment is Hydrochloric acid.

11 Evaluation As we increase the amount of copper sulphate, the rate of reaction between hydrochloric acid and aluminium speeds up too. Thus, more bubbles are produced, more hissing sound is heard and more heat is produced too.
