CHM1303 SOLIDS AS ADVANCED POLYMER MATERIALS This course can be taken by students with basic knowledge in Organic Chemistry and Polymer Science! TOPICS: 1.Organic Coatings(4 hrs)Prof. Mitch Winnik 2.Surface Properties of Polymers(4 hrs)Prof. Gilbert Walker 3.Polymer Nanomaterials (4 hrs)Prof. Dwight Seferos 4. Polymer Electronics (4 hrs) Prof. Timothy Bender 5.Polymers in Drug Delivery (2 hrs)Prof. Christine Allen Please contact Prof Seferos for the logon name and password before the first lecture and download a copy of the lecture notes.

Lectures: Wednesday 5-7 pm, Sept. 15 -Dec. 8, 2010 in LM 157 Course coordinator: Professor Dwight Seferos, e-mail: dseferos@chem.utoronto.ca Office hours: Thursday, 5-7 pm, LM628, by appointment Evaluation: 3 h final exam, TBA45% Participation in discussion(s)15% Oral presentation of term topic20% Term topic20% Discussions are led by students and allow you to discuss reading assignments in detail and you will be evaluated on your participation Oral presentation and term papers should be given on the same topic, related to advanced polymer materials, NOT RELATED to your research area or any research project in the group. Text: there is no single book covering the material included in this course. Each lecturer will provide recommended reading.

1. Polymer Coatings (Paints, paper coatings, latex films) Sept 15, 22 MW 2.Surface Properties of Polymers Sept 29, Oct 6 th GW 3.Discussion Oct 13 th DS 5.Polymer Nanomaterials (Self-assembly and template synthesis) Oct 20 th, 27 th DS 6.Polymer ElectronicsNov. 3 rd, 10 th TB 7. Student Oral presentationsNov. 21 st, 28 th DS/GW 8. Polymers for drug delivery ( term paper due! )Dec. 1CA 9. Exam TBD Schedule

Oral presentation PPT format 15 min + 3-5 min questions (will be discussed later) At least 2 class instructors will be evaluating the presentations The topic has to be chosen by a student. NO PRESENTATION can be given on the topic that is in the scope of research in the student’s research group. Dates: Beginning on Nov. 17 th, Order to be chosen by October 13, 2010. The evaluation will be based on: Novelty and complexity of presented work20 % Understanding of the material20 % Oral presentation20 % Answers to questions 20 % Quality of slides20 %

Suggestions for your term topic presentation Do not start working at the end of November! Do not exceed 15 slides Focus on 2-3 papers (do not try to embrace a huge project) Try to understand (and explain) EVERY slide you show Structure: Introduction (current state of art in the field) Justification of the project(s) The main body of the proposal (system, methods, results, their interpretation, etc) Your assessment of the results, comparison, etc…

Term paper Format: 12 pages (including figures), double spacing Due date: December 1, 2010 See recommendations for oral presentation

Exam December 13, 3 h, 6-9 pm (will be confirmed) One question for each topic. You have to answer 6 questions out of 7. Each class instructor will mark his/her question Essay format.
