Facilitating and Assessing Experiential Learning, Service Learning, and Internships A Qualitative Analyses

“The classroom can teach you the basics and principles of topics, but you can truly only learn when you actually get out there and experience it for yourself.

Scoring Guide Knowledge Application of Knowledge from Classes/Experience Increase in Knowledge about Business/Nonprofits Real World Experience Interpersonal Relations Knowledge About Others Communication Skills Self-Concept Efficacy (Knowledge about what you can do) Self-Growth Self-Confidence (and Self-Worth) Critical Thinking Problem Solving Creativity Developing and Applying New Methods Tolerance

Application of Knowledge from Classes/Experience “The process of making the brochure allowed me to exercise my knowledge in advertising and my creativity….” “I found myself applying the knowledge that I learned in my organization and Administration of Intramurals class. For example I used some information from an article titled, ‘Creating Commitment in Student Employees’ in order to attain commitment in participants.”

Increase in Knowledge about Business/Nonprofits “Had I not completed this project for Destined to Speak I would not have known how difficult it is to run a non- profit organization.”

Preparation for the World of Work “Overall this project has helped me prepare for future careers in the field of sports. I have gained valuable hands-on experience and received feedback from highly respected individuals in the Campus Recreation Services Department.”

Interpersonal Relations: Knowledge about Others “I learned that people aren’t always the same when they’re amongst a group of people and when they are at their work environment. This to me is a perfect example of the quote,’There is a time for work and a time for play.’ While working on this project, I gained real world, business knowledge….”

Interpersonal Relations: Communication Skills “Working closely with the employees and manager of Social Study, I learned and observed how the interaction with the customers is the most important part of owning a small business.”

Self-Concept: Efficacy “For the first time I had to go out and pursue this project on my own, with no outside help, to create something original. I feel more like an adult, almost like a businessman for some reason because I went out in the world and did something for someone and it feels good. In addition it’s comforting to know that the web page I designed is helping Social Study gain recognition and expand its customer base.”

Self-Concept: Growth I am proud of myself that I was able to make this happen all on my own….I planned out what I wanted to do, I made the right calls, and I accomplished what I had intended….I can confidently say that I have grown from this experience and learned to make things happen on my own.”

Self-Concept: Self-Confidence “After looking back on the project, I feel that I accomplished even more than I thought I would and I felt a weird sense of self-confidence and self-worth.”

Critical Thinking: Problem Solving “The most enjoyable part of the SLP was the search for the ultimate solution for the client. It was like a puzzle that included many factors to account for to find a solution.” Finally, I was able to solve one of the project’s biggest problems [how to identify and report problems on a system of trainls that spanned over 8 miles] using knowledge I had gained in a computer course that explored the features of PowerPoint.

Critical Thinking: Creativity “This is the first time I feel that I have attempted to and succeeded in being creative for academics…..Developing the fliers for AMB Painting left me with a greater feel for my creativity. During the development of the fliers and slogans, I put my creative mind to work….I never knew I could be creative until Tim told me how much he loved the flier….”

Critical Thinking: Developing and Applying New Methods “Through this project I learned a lot about computer graphic creation….Through this project I learned many new skills in web design, learned a lot about graphic design, and learned how to put the business writing skills I learned in our class to use.”

Tolerance of Others Working with a group of high school student volunteers to clear out invasive plant life tested my tolerance of others.… Working with the high school group provided me with an opportunity to practice adapting my leadership skills with the age group I find most challenging. Having experienced success, I have gained confidence in my ability to lead other groups I may encounter in the future.”
