1 In 2009, 8.8 million children died before their fifth birthday, most from easily preventable causes. The world has developed a plan to stop this and other tragedies associated with extreme poverty: the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). These eight goals tackle many of the problems associated with poverty; including hunger, education, and illness. MDG 4 aims to cut infant and child deaths by two-thirds by 2015 from 1990 levels. –With only five years to go, globally we are less than halfway towards achieving this target –In the Asia-Pacific region 18 of 29 developing countries are not on track to achieve this target. –The Australian Government is still not contributing our fair share to the global effort needed to prevent child deaths. Through the aid program, the Australian Government has the opportunity to save an estimated 240,000 children and 26,000 mothers in our immediate region each year, but we must increase our national spending on health in the aid budget, from $1 in every 6, to $1 in every 4 aid dollars. You can encourage the Government to do its fair share towards ensuring that every child possible can celebrate a 5 th birthday by taking a 5 th Birthday Action.
