Introduction ► What is the largest organ in your body? Your skin ► The integumentary system consists of your skin, hair, and nails. ► Much of the information that you receive about your environment comes through your skin. You can think of your skin as your largest sense organ.

Skin Structures Hair Sweat pore Oil gland Sweat gland Fat layer Nerve Blood vessels Dermis Epidermis

Skin Structures ► Three layers of the skin: 1) Epidermis – the outer, thinnest later of the your skin. 2) Dermis – the layer of cells directly below the epidermis. This layer is thicker than the epidermis and contains many blood vessels, nerves, muscles, oil and sweat glands. 3) Fat layer – the layer below the dermis that insulates the body.

Skin Structures ► Melanin - Cells in the epidermis produce the chemical melanin. -Melanin is a pigment that protects your skin and gives it color. - The different amounts of melanin produced by cells results in differences in skin color, as seen in the picture to the right.

Skin Functions ► The skin has many major functions which include: - protection of internal organs - sensory response to your environment - formation of vitamin D - regulation of body temperature - removing wastes from the body

Homeostasis ► Homeostasis is the regulation of an organism’s internal, life-maintaining conditions despite changes in its environment. ► The skin aids in maintaining homeostasis by maintaining a constant temperature – sweating and dilating blood vessels when hot and constricting blood vessels and making goose bumps when cold.

Human Body System Project 3 days total to work on 1= pick out organ to research 2= make wanted poster 3= present to class

► Your job for this journey is to gather all the information you can about your organ. At the end of this cybertrail, you will need to whip up a wanted poster to share your finds with the other cowboys and cowgirls in your camp.

Information to collect… ► Which organ system contains your organ? What are the organ's main functions? How does your organ works with other systems to keep the body healthy? Which diseases or disorders affects your organ? Can a person live without your organ?

The Roundup ► Share the information you have discovered by completing a Wanted poster. The poster should include a picture of your organ and the information outlined in the "Gather Your Information" section.
