2 Raising Arthritis Awareness O Information dissemination is the cornerstone to: O Raising awareness O Partnership building O Expanding program reach O Influencing policy efforts O Critical need to communicate the burden and impact of arthritis to: O State program managers O Health officials O Decision-makers O Various community sectors O Program delivery partners O Voluntary health organization staff O Information from a literature review and BRFSS data is used to produce data reports in a fact-sheet format

3 Key Components Involve partners in fact sheet planning stages and dissemination plans and efforts Perform a thorough literature review Identify key messages and public health strategies to reduce the burden and impact of arthritis Where applicable, include opportunities for cross chronic disease integration messaging Provide information in various forms (print and internet) Allow blank space for partner customization/program marketing Update fact sheets as new BFRSS data, MMWRs, and journal articles become available

4 Fact Sheet Structure O Presented in a series of five special topics fact sheets: O Self-Management O Physical Activity O Work O Weight O California O Each fact sheet is formatted, when applicable, to include: O A public health message O Burden and impact data O Public health strategies O Healthy People 2010 objective(s), O Personal message from a Californian with arthritis.

15 From Our Partners O Responses to the fact sheet series has been overwhelming positive by supporting partners, systems partners, funders, other chronic disease programs, and state arthritis programs. O Community partners distribute fact sheets with board members, county health departments, potential program partners, legislative visits, and health fairs. O Nonprofit partners use fact sheet information in grant proposals and responding to media inquires to further strengthen arthritis awareness.
