2 Introduction 2 Tohsaku states that “Modern Japanese is written by combining three different writing systems”(p.13). 1.Hiragana… the most basic type of characters used to show Japanese origin, preposition words (example; in, at, and on ) and inflectional endings (example; affirmative, negative, and tense). 2.Katakana… characters is used for words borrowed from other languages. 3.Kanji… is Chinese based symbols that gives additional feelings and expressions to the Japanese written language that includes many more words, nouns, verbs, and adjectives.

4 Hiragana letters 4 There are forty-six hiragana symbols. Each one represents either: A vowel (a, i, u, e, o) or A combination of a consonant and a vowel together. Exception letter is the “ ん ” letter which comes at the end of a word

6 Hiragana Writing Direction There are two different ways to write Japanese. Horizontal Writing Vertical Writing み か ん Horizontally from left to right Top to bottom and right to left on the paper which is the more traditional way of writing Japanese.
