8 Reading Strategies When helping your child read at home, several strategies may be used to aid in decoding unknown words. 1. Tell your child to look at the picture. You may tell your child the word is something that can be seen in the picture, if that is the case. 2. Tell your child to look for chunks in the word, such as it in sit, at in mat, or and ing in standing Ask your child to get his/her mouth ready to say the word by shaping the mouth for the beginning letter. 4. Ask your child if the word looks like another word s/he knows.  (i.e. Does bed look like red?) 5. Ask your child to go on and read to the end of the sentence.  Often by reading the other words in context, your child can figure out the unknown word. 6. If your child says the wrong word while reading, ask questions like:  Does it make sense?  Does it sound right?  Does it look right?

IFAGDFDA (I have a goldfish called Adam.) Print goes in a straight line from left to right. Print is made up of letters Letters stand for sounds in the words s/he wants to write. Pictures match words.

(I found a lamp and a genie came out.) Written language is made up of words and separated by spaces. Written words are made up of a number of different letters. Written words have beginning and ending sounds. Written words have vowels. When you know a word “AND” you spell it the same way every time.

12 End of the Year My frarit prt of the clasrom is the libare bekus it has Books. And we lrn how to red. I like it. (My favorite part of the classroom is the library because it has books. And we learn how to read. I like it.)
