5 Perhaps the most famous explorer was Christopher Columbus. Born in Genoa, Italy, in 1451, young Columbus first went to sea at the age of fourteen. As a young man, he settled in Portugal and married a woman of noble background. After his wife's death in 1485, Columbus and his young son, Diego moved to Spain.

11 IN CONCLUSION: IN CONCLUSION: We have learned that Columbus’s voyages gave Europe first important knowledge of the new world. His last days were spent in disappointment and neglect. Heart-broken, he died ignorant of the greatness of his own discovery. Though later many places have been named in his honour, America however was named after another explorer Amerigo Vespucci.
