Overview of Security Large lodging properties may have a separate security division In smaller properties, the rooms division or the general manager may be responsible for security Some hotels hire an outside company to provide security officers

Liability Liability refers to the responsibility to pay for damage or loss Most states have limitations of liability, or limits on the amount a hotel must pay a guest for loss of property Hotels may provide safe deposit boxes kept in a vault for guest use continued

Liability The risk of lawsuits can be reduced with good safety and security procedures Insurance helps to protect against financial loss Types of insurance policies include –property insurance –liability insurance –crime insurance

Security Staff Plainclothes security officers –wear regular clothing –keep patrons from thinking the establishment has a crime problem Uniformed security officers –give the impression that everything is under control –make guests feel safe

Role of All Employees Security and front desk staff work together to handle guests’ security concerns and respond to emergencies All employees are responsible for noticing and reporting problems or dangers and should –report accidents and hazards –report suspicious people –take responsibility for keys and key cards

Preventing Employee Theft Keep supplies in locked rooms and use a requisition system Take inventory to see if items are missing Restrict times and locations where employees enter and exit the building Record employees’ arrival and departure times Inspect packages taken into or out of the building by employees
