3 1999 Fire College3 Course Overview Course GoalCourse Goal –To learn the skills necessary to function in the capacity of a training officer and/or instructor in the Illinois Fire Service. How this will be accomplishedHow this will be accomplished –Using a ficticous fire department and actual situations, we will simulate the activities necessary to function as a training officer and instructor.

Once a fire department is organized it may elect to participate in the OSFM certification and reimbursement program.Once a fire department is organized it may elect to participate in the OSFM certification and reimbursement program. –State of Illinois has the finest program in the nation –Majority of certifications carry IFSAC approval –Certification training programs are made available free of charge to fire departments who meet certain criteria

8 1999 Fire College8 Request for Provisional Facility Approval The fire chief agrees to meet minimum criteria to participate in the programThe fire chief agrees to meet minimum criteria to participate in the program –Fire station that serves as a classroom –Pumper that meets current NFPA 1901 criteria –Current set of IFSTA manuals –Improvise to provide all required training –Keep training records in accordance with Training Record Jacket requirements May request Unlimited Facility Approval if criteria metMay request Unlimited Facility Approval if criteria met

11 1999 Fire College11 Application for Course Approval Needed by fd’s, schools, colleges or state associations who wish to offer courses recognized by the Division.Needed by fd’s, schools, colleges or state associations who wish to offer courses recognized by the Division. –Check appropriate level or course the organization wishes to teach and certify firefighters at Must have an instructor at the level they wish to certify firefighters atMust have an instructor at the level they wish to certify firefighters at –Names and S/S # are needed to verify certifications –Course approval will be valid for 5 years unless new Chief is hired Or when new courses are addedOr when new courses are added

14 1999 Fire College14 When Beginning a New Course Each student must be issued a set of course objectives from the approved courseEach student must be issued a set of course objectives from the approved course –Certification criteria is made from this –Practical and written examinations come from these sources

15 1999 Fire College15 Courses and Certifications Available 32 certification levels are available at this time32 certification levels are available at this time A majority of these courses are available to fire departments to teach in-house if they meet the instructor and student prerequisitesA majority of these courses are available to fire departments to teach in-house if they meet the instructor and student prerequisites –Fire Officer Certification courses are only taught by State Associations and Community Colleges
