4

5 Simplified Model of Food Scrap Recovery Network Grocery Schools Produce terminals Landfill Commodity Markets Fertilizer Food & Biodegradable Plastics Residuals Food Scraps Collectors Animal Feed Compost Facility Anaerobic Digester Fuels Compost and Soil Amendments Restaurants Energy Other

6 The 5 Phases of Collection Store to Can – Needs to be recognized because this is a personal not communal cost – Bottom line to generator drives the ability to grow food scrap diversion programs Can to Truck – Container choice 65 gal? 90 gal? 3 or 6 cy ? – Matching truck to container – Need for standardization which is message of OGF project Truck Store to Store – The garbage truck’s next stop is next door – The food scrap truck’s next stop is across town; or, in another city – Building route density is goal of OGF project Truck Routing – micro routing – Using routing software once network is built Truck to Processor – Distance  Costs – Technology  Costs – Store goals ?

7 Processor Issues Acceptable Materials and Contamination – NO PLASTIC BAGS! – Standards for bags is goal of OGF project Processor sets rules Send message back through supply chain This causes that “personal” issue at the beginning of the loop – Hassle factor – Continuous training and re-training
