Industrial Athletes….

Water Facts Water is essential to good health 60% of your body weight is water Water flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to your cells and provides a moist environment for ear, nose, and throat tissues. Water regulates body temperature

Water Facts How do you lose water? – Breathing, perspiration, urine and bowel movements. What is dehydration? When you don’t have enough water in your body to carry out normal functions, even mild dehydration can drain your energy and make you tired. The average American is chronically dehydrated

Contributing Circumstances to the Industrial Athlete Often workers show up to work already dehydrated. Alcohol, poor diet, alcohol, then coffee in the morning. Aging workforce. Other health factors such as diabetes and hypertension. Blame symptoms of heat stress on other factors.

The Effect of Dehydration on Performance MONITORING DEHYDRATION

How Much Water Do you Need? Average man burns 2,900 calories/day (12 cups water) and the average woman burns 2,200 (9 cups water). 1 cup = 8 oz. (236 milliliters) of water (12) 8 oz. Cups = 96 oz. (9) 8 oz. Cups = 72 oz. 128 oz. equals 1 gallon

“Never Had a Heat Accident” In our society -heat related injuries are often ignored, but are considered a preventable injury. Heat injuries may get attributed to other factors. Worker who passes out & falls down may end up being reported as a slip & fall injury. A heat stress prevention program can assist in preventing injuries.

Importance of Electrolytes Electrolytes are minerals (magnesium, potassium, sodium and calcium) that maintain optimal nerve and muscle function. Electrolytes are lost through perspiration and other types of dehydration. Sqwincher is absorbed into the body at a higher rate than water, allowing the body to replenish the electrolytes and minerals needed for rehydration.

Importance of Electrolytes Workers are more apt to drink products that are palatable. (Don’t believe me? Ask your kids.) Allows for the consumption of fluids needed to maintain proper levels of electrolytes and stay hydrated.

Productivity We want workers to be safe. If worker capacity is impaired productivity is impaired as well. Inadequate Hydration = Loss of Productivity 2% Dehydration Factor = A 20% Loss of Productivity Average cost of providing electrolyte beverages remains about $1 dollar per day.

Increase Morale When we are interested in their safety & welfare – When we provide them with a beverage that tastes good, easy to use, going to replenish the things they need to remain productive In short - electrolytes equals a constant positive message to workers

Heat Stress… Heat Stress… Know the Hazard!

Medical Preconditions Health issues can increase the risk of heat stress. Heat stress can increase the risk of health problems. Diet and exercise can play a big role in overall health. The two largest health risks in the US Industrial work place are Hypertension and Diabetes.

Medical Preconditions HYPERTENSION 33% or 74.5 million of the US population age 20 yrs and older have been diagnosed with Hypertension. 1 out of 3 adults in the US have high blood pressure. Of all people with HBP: 77.6% -aware – 44.1%-under control – 67.9% - under treatment – 55.9% - not under control In 2006 Hypertension killed over 56,000 people in the US. How to Control Hypertension: Consult your Dr. first. Medication along with a low sodium diet, low calorie diet, & exercise can all help control high blood pressure.

Medical Preconditions DIABETES 11.3% or 25.6 million of the US population age 20yrs and older have been diagnosed with Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes Type 1 Diabetic – the body is not producing insulin Type 2 Diabetic- the cells do not respond correctly to the insulin How to control Diabetes – Consult your Dr. first. Insulin treatment along with a low carbohydrate, low sodium diet and exercise call all help control Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes
