THE PERIODIC TABLE
The Periodic Table: Your Friend…
When something occurs at regular intervals (you can predict what happens / comes next) PERIODIC
So what makes the periodic table periodic? ATOMIC NUMBER!!! (across the chart) AKA: “Z”
The properties of the elements are a periodic function of their atomic numbers PERIODIC LAW
All of the elements in a horizontal row PERIOD
All of the elements in a vertical column (aka Family) GROUP
Dmitri Mendeleev (1834-1907) invented the periodic table based on increasing atomic mass …and yes, he too, is your friend
Henry Moseley (1913) revised the periodic table based on properties and atomic number …and yes, he too, is your friend
s 1 group ALKALI METALS Good Conductors
s 2 group ALKALINE EARTH METALS Harder, more dense, stronger than alkali
d sub energy level TRANSITION METALS Columns 3-12
4f sub energy level LANTHANOID SERIES Z = 57-70
5f sub energy level ACTINOID SERIES Z = 89-102 All have radioactive forms (unstable p + & N °)
Columns 13, 14, 15, 16 are named by the first element in the column (e.g. Boron Group)
p 5 group HALOGENS Combine with metals to form salts Very reactive
p 6 group NOBLE GASES Inert gases (not reactive) 8 valence electrons
Unit 3 Notes – Chapter 3 Chemistry Mr. Nelson.
The History and Arrangement of the Periodic Table
Dimitri Mendeleev discovered that elements when arranged by mass seemed to organize themselves in other ways as well.
The Periodic Table of Elements. History of the Periodic Table 1869 : Dmitri Mendeleev Considered the father of the periodic table of elements Periodic.
THE PERIODIC TABLE.
Physical Science Periodic Table. Periodic table Groups – vertical columns and have similar properties Period – horizontal rows, properties vary across.
Learning Targets In 1860 chemists met at the First International Congress of Chemists in Germany. They established a uniform method of measuring.
The horizontal rows of the periodic table are called PERIODS.

The Periodic Table Families. Why is it important to me? Useful because it allows you to determine properties of elements by their location on the table.
