1 All About Me Writing Project Ms. McManus 7 th grade ELA

2 LEQ: What tools do writers use to organize their thoughts and information when writing an informational piece? (W2) We will write one paragraph on each of the following text structures, about your life: Problem/Solution Cause/Effect Definition Compare/Contrast And then we will create a timeline showing sequence of events/Chronological order.

3 LEQ: What tools do writers use to organize their thoughts and information when writing an informational piece? (W2) The project will include: Headings and subheadings At least two different visual graphics to support the information: graph, chart, and picture All items will be stapled together into a manila folder, or displayed onto a poster board. It will be scored using the attached rubric.

4 LEQ: What tools do writers use to organize their thoughts and information when writing an informational piece? (W2) Problem/Solution: The student has a well-developed paragraph that contains a clear problem and solution. There are few to no errors in grammar, spelling and punctuation.

(W2) Think of a time that you faced a problem in your life, and how you went about to solve it. Step # 1: Brainstorm with table partners about possible “problem” topics that a middle school aged or elementary student may have faced up to this point of their life. - It could be school related or outside of school. (family, friends, pets, sports, school…)

(W2) Problem/Solution Complete the graphic organizer using the brainstorming sheet from earlier, if necessary. Rough Draft: On a sheet of loose-leaf paper begin to write your rough draft. – Draw the reader into your story with a creative, catchy starter. – Write out your reasons and support sentences. – Have a concluding sentence that wraps up your topic.

8 LEQ: What tools do writers use to organize their thoughts and information when writing an informational piece? (W2) Student/peer editing of your rough draft. 1. Switch papers with a table partner and read their rough draft. 2. Now skim back over their rough draft and look for errors in spelling. Circle any spelling errors that you see, or think are wrong. 3. Did the student capitalize every first letter in each sentence? 4. Does each student have an end mark punctuation? 5. Are there any fragments or run on sentences? If so, put a check mark on the edge of the paragraph to signify this.

The effect of peer pressure on students The effect of cramming for a test. The effects of stress on students. The effects of watching reality shows on tv. The effects of changing friends, or schools, or moving.

(W2) Definition/Description: to define and explain it parts or specifics, usually with examples. Main Idea/Detail: states a central idea and then uses facts, definitions, quotations, concrete details and examples to support the idea. Topic: Think of three or four adjectives that you or others might use to describe you. Then explain how those adjectives define you by giving specific examples from you life.

(W2) Background information on yourself: name, age, where you live, interests, hobbies… Main Idea: Adjectives that describe Ms. McManus Detail: Creative -I like to write stories and poetry. -active imagination. Detail: Organized -always straightening and re-arranging things to find the best fit. -binders and labels for everything. Detail: Caring -I notice peoples emotions and try to help them when they need help. -I help my 80yr old neighbor with yard work, and shoveling. Detail: Musical - I play piano and drums -I was in UD marching band, percussion ensemble, pep band, and symphonic band. -love concerts and listening to music

Going to a live sporting event, to watching one on TV. Watching a sport or musical performance to actually playing the sport or performing the music. Your two favorite holidays Your two favorite foods Two of your family members, or two of your friends Two types of music (rap to classical; or two songs in particular…) Being poor to being rich Living in the U.S. to living in another country

(W2) Playing Wii or X-box computer games to playing real games Two movies you enjoy or dislike; or two books you enjoy or dislike Snow to rain Being a teen to being a toddler Two pets you own, or the life of a dog to the life of a cat Talking to a parent and talking to your friends Camping as to sleeping in a hotel Your best birthday to your worst birthday Your happiest day to your saddest day

Furry, Needs baths and grooming

(W2) Sequence of Events (timeline) Use the graphic organizer provided in class to create a timeline of either a specific event in your life, or a timeline of your life from a date you choose until another date you choose.
