1 M.Taborelli, 7/11/07 Recommendations for handling high precision accelerating structures (EDMS 874513 ) M.Taborelli Aim: avoid contamination of the parts (dust, human skin, hair, airborne hydrocarbons, tools …) and the potential damages (shock, downfall, heavy tools sitting on the structure…): it is more effective to keep parts clean than to rely on cleaning! The RF lab: ideally dust free..….as clean as possible - potential contamination should not be carried in the lab (no dirty/dusty/oily parts should enter) - no action which can lift dust from floor when structures are exposed - no machining and filing of parts in the rf-lab

2 M.Taborelli, 7/11/07 Table, tools,….in the RF lab - only the strictly necessary tools on the table - put cleaned structures on aluminum foil (the table is never clean, so not directly on the table!) and change foil frequently - V-shaped supports for the microscope should be periodically rinsed with ethanol ► The tools for handling and mounting: - should be cleaned (ethanol) periodically or before handling the structures -these tools should not be used for other tasks -the tools should remain always in the RF lab or cleaned when brought back to the RF lab. -painted tools and supports should be avoided ► Install an ultrasound bath in a clean environment (not like now) close to or in the rf lab (ventilation problem?)

3 M.Taborelli, 7/11/07 Manipulation, transport, storage: Reception of new parts : -if the parts are heavily lubricated they should not enter the RF lab (look at stains, drops of lubricant or grease, inspect holes and threaded holes) ► pre-cleaning (ethanol or similar) - fingerprints makes stains of oxidation which are difficult to eliminate by usual cleaning: avoid finger contact as much as possible Cleaned and pre-cleaned parts: -handle with appropriate gloves (during RF testing, mounting, microscopy inspection, metrology, preparing for thermal treatments and so on): -fine cotton knitted allowed before final cleaning, only unpowdered smooth vinyl (as SCEM 50.43.20.800.5) after final cleaning

4 M.Taborelli, 7/11/07 - appropriate boxes : -parts should be either fixed in the box - or the box should have compartments made with plastic foam enclosing the parts - or sufficient amount of “bubble” plastic (should not feel the sharp edges) on the parts - quadrants and structures should never circulate or lie around in the Rf lab without protection: -keep cleaned single quadrants should always wrapped in silk paper or aluminum foil and an additional layer of “bubble plastic” foil -structures mounted on the UHV flange: the aluminum foil should cover the complete region on the UHV side and avoid contamination with dust - Wrapping in aluminum foil is valid also for all the components as waveguides and similar (dust!)

5 M.Taborelli, 7/11/07 Re-machining and modifications -Ideally polishing should not be done in the rf-lab, but in a separate room -The present workshop is not adapted for the level of accuracy required: dust falling on the polishing table (concrete particles from the ceiling, tool close to a corridor zone with frequent passage of persons…..). This aspect could be improved. -The present workshop does not have a sufficiently accurate infrastructure for polishing/re-machining and control. Planarity and perpendicularity of the faces at the desired level is not guaranteed. Improvement requires investments which are possibly beyond the affordable level (machining and control). Note that the tunable 11GHz structure and disk structures should not have such problems!
