2 Introduction to the Course Course Objectives By the end of this course students will be able to: · Master the grammatical uses and forms of nouns, pronouns, adverbs, articles, modals, questions, clauses and time markers. · Deliver oral presentations with more confidence, and accuracy · Speak correct English while using appropriate tense and vocabulary. · Scan a text for different parts of speech and to apply grammatical rules in their writing. · Read for learning the correct use of grammatical structures to acquire academic vocabulary. · Use punctuation in their writing ambitiously. · Write different, narrative, descriptive and persuasive texts while using correct patterns of English grammar and a variety of sentence structure. · Use cohesive devices in their writing.

3 Course Contents Course Title: Functional English Course Duration: 6 months (30 sessions) Class Duration: 90 minutes (twice a week Course Contents Sessions 1 Introduction to the course and diagnostic test 1 2 Simple sentence and its parts 3 3 Types of sentences (Functions) 1 4 Types of sentences (Structure) 3 5 Quiz No 1 and discussion on problems 1 6 Tenses (Simple present, continuous) Active & Passive voice 3 7 Tenses (Past simple and continuous) Active & Passive 3 8 Tenses (Present Perfect & Past perfect tense) Active & Passive voice 2 9 Grammar and Vocabulary Quiz No 2 and discussion on problems 1 10 Use of Modal auxiliaries (Can, could, would, should, may, might, ought to) 2 11 Use of verbal 2 12 Use of Conditional Sentences 2 13 Grammar and Vocabulary Quiz No 3 and Reinforcement 1 14 Proof Reading for Common Errors (Errors in sentence structures) 2 15 Proof Reading for Common Errors(Errors in use of Articles and Prepositions)1 16 Proof Reading for Common Errors(Use of irregular verbs and confusing word pairs) 1 17 Discussion on Final Paper 1

4 Course outcomes After successfully passing this course Students will be able to:  Learn and apply basic grammar items in their academic writing.  Write without major grammatical errors.  Write paragraphs while using cohesive devices.  Use variety of sentence structure.  Use the right tenses in their writings.  Understand a variety of verb forms and functions in sentence structures.  Can highlight grammar errors in any written piece of work. Presentation Skills Students will be able to:  Utilize essential vocabulary and phrases when presenting information  Produce error free speech with better confidence and comfort level with English language.  Initiate small discussions for social interaction sake.

6 Activity Divide the class into groups (4 students in each group) Group members will write down five things that  make a successful or unsuccessful team.  Like or dislike most  Which can help to make you a good professional  Which can help to secure good grades in examination Then present to the entire class
