1 Welcome to the Virtual Math Teams of the Math Forum @ Drexel University A Quick Tutorial for Beginners Step 1. First of all, you need to go to this URL http://home.old.mathforum.org:1354/concertChat/newUser.jsp and fill out the registration form. The registration page will look like the image below. When you are done please click the “Create Account’ button.http://home.old.mathforum.org:1354/concertChat/newUser.jsp Important: Please make sure that you enter a valid email address. Your password will be forwarded to your email addresss and you will need that information to proceed to step 2.

2 Step 2: In order to access the lobby you can use: http://home.old.mathforum.org:1354/concertChat/vmtClient.jsphttp://home.old.mathforum.org:1354/concertChat/vmtClient.jsp This will bring a login screen similar to the one below. Enter your nickname and your password to go to the lobby. Notes: This chat environment uses Java Web Start to run. Java and Java Web Start might be included in many computers already. However, If you need to install additional support for Java for the computer that you will be using, you can get download instructions at: http://java.sun.com/products/javawebstart/download.jsphttp://java.sun.com/products/javawebstart/download.jsp The first time you run our chat environment, you'll see a dialog box with a security warning. It is safe to allow the application to run on your computer.

3 Step 3: Entering the lobby. This is what the lobby looks like. Here you can see: 1. List of your friends 2. List of online users (who is currently in the lobby) 3. List of available tasks. (e.g. GridWorld, Material1) For each task you can a. view the description by clicking on “show task” b. create a new room within a task by clicking on “create room” 4. List of available chat rooms for each task. (e.g. Euclid’s room) For each room you can check a. the state of the room: - WAITING TO START: - STARTED b. the date the room was created c. the owner of the room d. the theme set by the owner e. the list of current members who are permitted to access the room (decided by the owner) f. the list of current users working in the room now 5. A chat window that allows you to contact with others in the lobby.

4 Step 4: Basic features of the lobby. To create a room: 1. decide to which task you want to add a new room. 2. in that task’s space click on “create room”, and fill out the dialog box. *. note that users in your MyFriends list will be automatically added to the list of current members of your room. *. (can you invite s.o.?) To enter a room: 1. click on “join” to send a request to the owner of the room for his/her permission 2. once accepted, the link for that room will be changed from “join” to “enter”. When you click on “enter” the room will be displayed in a new window. To add a user to your MyFriends list: a. double click on the nickname of the user on the list of Online Users. b. a request will be sent to that user. A dialog box will appear to display that user’s response. To chat, type your message in the text field on the bottom right corner. When you press Enter your message is sent to everyone and appears on the chat window To view the task description: a. click on “show task” for the corresponding task. The description will appear in a pop- up window.

5 This is what the chat environment looks like. In addition to the regular chat you also have a drawing program that is shared by everyone who is in a chat room. To chat, type your message in the text field on the bottom right corner. When you press Enter your message is sent to everyone and appears on the chat window. You can make the chat area bigger or smaller by sliding this horizontal bar left or right. To link one chat message to another, double click the message you want to respond to and you will see a blue arrow connecting that message with the text field for new messages. You can also make a reference to a part of another message. To do that highlight the portion of the text by clicking and holding the left mouse button. To link your posting to multiple messages press and hold the left Ctrl key as you double click on the messages that you want to link. To delete your links hit the ESC key (note: your cursor should be active in the message box. This will delete the text as well!) Step 5: The Chat Environment I Number of messages in the history that have not been downloaded yet. To download the 10 last messages use this button: Auto scrolling disabled/enabled Threaded versus time ordered view View/hide system messages

6 To draw on the whiteboard, use the tools on top of the whiteboard to draw lines, geometrical figures or text. You will find more information about these tools at the bottom of this page. To link a chat message to a drawing, click on the Reference button and then select the portion of the whiteboard you want to refer to by clicking and holding the left mouse button. You can shade a rectangular region on the whiteboard this way. A blue line connecting your message and the shaded region will be displayed.
