6 EULITA / Liese Katschinka Copyright (c) 2015 6 What is a standard? A standard is a document that provides requirements, specifications, guidelines or characteristics that can be used consistently to ensure that materials, products, processes and services are fit for their purpose. ISO definition

7 EULITA / Liese Katschinka Copyright (c) 2015 7 A standard is a common denominator of different opinions expressed by experts in the field. A standard defines the state of the art of a given product or service. A standard is a voluntary effort by the stakeholders concerned. A standard serves as a reference document for producers of products / providers of services AND users of products / services A standard is NOT an equivalent to legislation. A standard is a work in progress  it is revised periodically.

A guidance document for legal interpreting service providers A guidance document for users of legal interpreting services A reference source for all judicial stakeholders A tool to harmonize legal interpreting standards A means to raise the quality of legal interpreting standards

9 EULITA / Liese Katschinka Copyright (c) 2014 9 Background to EULITA activities to develop a standard on legal interpreting services in judicial settings EULITA has liaison status in ISO TC 37 / SC 5 EULITA followed the recent development of standards on interpreting services, especially - community interpreting - interpreting / general guidelines

10 EULITA / Liese Katschinka Copyright (c) 2015 10 EULITA submitted a proposal to ISO TC 37 / SC 5 for a new work item in June 2014 ISO TC 37 / SC 5 accepted the proposal in November 2014 and assigned it to WG 2 (interpreting) Project coordinator  EULITA Experts nominated by several countries First draft presented to EULITA members for discussion at Opatija GA on 21 March

12 EULITA / Liese Katschinka Copyright (c) 2014 12 Next steps: - 48 months – time frame for developing the standard - draft standard to be presented to TC 37 / SC 5 at annual meeting in June 2015 - request to national mirror committees to contribute to content of standard - ISO procedure from working draft, to committee draft, to draft international standard, to final draft international standard and – finally – international standard
