 WWII affected every aspect of American Life  Americans were asked to make sacrifices in support of the war effort and the ideas for which we fought  http://vimeo.com/6805277 http://vimeo.com/6805277 2 copyrighted Danner2012

After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the United States decided they had to fight the Japanese in war. The Japanese were part of the axis powers of WWII. The United States were on the side called the allies. By entering into war with Japan, America entered into World War II. (They had already been supporting Great Britain in the war) 3 copyrighted Danner2012

The United States mobilized for war, or got ready to fight. Americans joined the armed forces and some were drafted (basically their social security number was drawn and they were forced to fight in the war)- more than 15 million Americans served. 4 copyrighted Danner2012

 Factories and workers were needed to produce goods to win the war. 5 copyrighted Danner2012

The need for uniforms, guns, airplanes, and tanks meant the need for more workers to make the supplies. This helped America to get out of the great depression, because Americans could work and trade the war supplies. United States factories made and supplied more supplies than any other country in the war. New technology was also created, such as the atomic bomb. 6 copyrighted Danner2012

WWII also helped women and African Americans in some ways. Many women and African Americans were able to work in factories because of the need for workers to make supplies for the war. Also, African Americans fought in the war. The Tuskeegee Airmen were the first group of African American airmen in US history! They were Air Force pilots in WWII. 7 copyrighted Danner2012

 Thousands of American Women took jobs in defense plants during the war  Women who worked in jobs that only men had held before the war were nicknamed “Rosie the Riveter”. 8 copyrighted Danner2012

 The need for workers temporarily broke down some racial barriers  Although discrimination continued, many African Americans were hired to work in defense plants 9 copyrighted Danner2012

 After Pearl Harbor, people worried about another attack from the Japanese.  Franklin D. Roosevelt signed an order that forced 100,000 Japanese Americans to leave their homes and live as prisoners in internment camps.  Even though some Japanese American citizens were fighting in the war for the United States, the Japanese Americans were still forced into these camps. 10 copyrighted Danner2012

America Unites: Pearl Harbor united Americans. Americans rationed, or limited the amount of, or types of food they ate and supplies they used, so that these could be used in the war instead. Victory Gardens were popular during WWII. Americans were encouraged to grow and can as much as they could. The food from farms was needed for the war effort. 11 copyrighted Danner2012
