3 Understanding the fear of the Lord
The Meaning Of The Word “Fear”. In the Hebrew, the word is yir’ah and is used in the Old Testament to describe: Fear, terror. Awesome or terrifying thing (object causing fear). Fear (of God), respect, reverence, and piety. The Greek word is phobos, and it is used to describe: Fear, dread, and terror. That which strikes terror.

4 Examples OF THOSE WHO FEARED GOD
Noah. Noah feared the Lord and in obedience to Him built the ark (Hebrews 11:7). Abraham. Abraham demonstrated his fear of the Lord by obedience offering his son as a sacrifice (Genesis (22:12). Joseph. Joseph expressed his fear of the Lord by speaking the truth to his brothers (Genesis 42:18).

5 Examples OF THOSE WHO FEARED GOD
Jonah. Jonah expressed his fear by revealing his true identity (Jonah 1:9). Nehemiah. Nehemiah spoke of certain ones who feared the Lord (Nehemiah 1:11; 7:2). Peter. Those who fear God – please God (Acts 10:35; 1Peter 3:12). Solomon. Purpose and summation of life (Eccl.12:13; Proverbs 23:17).

6 THE IMPORTANCE OF the fear of the Lord
From The Book Of Proverbs, We Learn… The “fear of the Lord” is the beginning of knowledge (Proverbs 1:7). The “fear of the Lord” will cause one to hate evil (Proverbs 8:13). The “fear of the Lord” will prolong life (Proverbs 10:27). The “fear of the Lord” provides strong confidence and is a foundation of life (Proverbs 14:26-27).

7 THE IMPORTANCE OF the fear of the Lord
From The Book Of Proverbs, We Learn… The “fear of the Lord” prompts one to depart from evil (Proverbs 16:6). The “fear of the Lord” leads to a satisfying life, and spares one from much evil (Proverbs 19:23). The “fear of the Lord” is the way to riches, honor, and life (Proverbs 22:4).

8 What fear causes us to do
Do What God Says!! The book of Deuteronomy serves to demonstrate the relationship of the fear of God to obedience (Deut. 6:2; 8:6; 13:4; 17:19). Only those who DO the will of God can enter the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 7:21-23). The fear of God leads to obedience of God, which gives us confidence in our heart before God (1John 3:21-22, 7). The Bible tells us that we perfect holiness in the fear of God (2Cor. 7:1; John 15:10-13).

9 What fear causes us to do
Respect For The Word Of God!! If one honors God, he will have the utmost respect for His word. Developing the fear of the Lord begins with His word (Deuteronomy 31:10-13; 17:18-19). If we fear God we too will hold the word in high esteem (2Timothy 3:16-17; 2:15).

10 What fear causes us to do
Prepare For Judgment!! There is a certain “fearful” expectation in view of judgment (Hebrews 10: 27, 31). At judgment we will give personal responsibility and accountability before God (Philippians 2:12; 2Cor. 5:9-10). The wrath of God should motivate us to fear Him as we live day by day (Galatians 6:7-8; Amos 4:12; Hebrews 12:28-29).
