2 GOALS FOR THE YEAR To challenge students to explore many sources and methods of inquiry and research – use of archives, news, current events, in geography/ history/ politics To provide challenging tasks with meaningful connections from local Texas to the global society through current events, media, role play scenarios, presentations To challenge students to become proud citizens and conscious decision makers in their reading/writing/thinking about Texas and events in their world

4 First Nine Weeks Focus: The New Republic, Statehood, Texas Civil War, and Reconstruction Including: geography map skills, regions, resources overview, primary sources, eyewitness accounts

5 Second Nine Weeks Focus: Growth and Development Including: cattle, railroads, cotton, oil, progress and industry, transportation Semester exam

6 Third Nine Weeks Focus: Government in Texas/Citizenship Including: state government modern and progressive era, discrimination, World War I,II, Great Depression

7 Fourth Nine Weeks Focus: Contemporary Texas Including: peace, modern emergence, living museum, major Texas contributions and impact in the U.S./world Semester Exam
