5 GENERAL CLASS SCHEDULE 8.00 – 8.30 Parents will leave their children in the lunch room, breakfast time for the children 8.30 – 9.00 Prayer, Pledge and Calendar, Bathrooms 9.00 – 9.30 Religion 9.30 – 10.30 First block of Math/ELA switch 10.30– 11.30 Second block of Math/ELA switch

6 GENERAL CLASS SCHEDULE 11.40 – 12.10 Lunch 12.15 – 12.45 Rest Time (in the main classroom). 12.45 – 01.30 Free Play 01.30 – 02.15 Other Subjects (Switch for afternoon subjects) 02.15 – 02.25 Homework and dismissal. Special subjects will vary

7 CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS HOMEWORK Assignments are from Monday to Thursday. Homework assignments for the four days will be given on every Monday. CLASS FOLDER To be taken home and brought back daily with the completed homework assignment of the day.

8 CLASSROOM EXPETATIONS SHOW AND TELL (On Fridays) Purpose of this segment is to provide children an opportunity to express themselves freely. They can bring any object, pictures, toys, books, etc. for this. Toys that represent weapons (guns, knives, etc.) are not allowed for ‘Show & Tell’ assignments. Some Fridays will be warm weather and we will be going to the park in the mornings if there are enough chaperones for the children.

9 Upcoming Events Children will have in class holiday parties which are strictly just for the children. Parents can bring in goodies and projects for them to do during those days. (Halloween, Christmas, Valentines Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter)

10 Upcoming Events 100 th Day Celebration Each student will prepare a project with 100 items. Parents are invited to help the student to create the project.

12 Upcoming Events Earth Day Art and science project by the students done in the classroom. Museum Trip The students will visit the Natural History Museum as part of the science curriculum

13 Upcoming Events Community Day Children will understand different parts of their community and create their own community in the classroom. Parents will be invited to participate at the end of the year. Culture Day Students will be discussing diversity and culture and will have a day learning about themselves and others

15 GENERAL Smart Board Smart board will be used for interactive teaching and daily calendar. Report Cards First report card will be distributed in November during parent-teacher conference. Second report card will be in February, third card will be in April and the final report card will be given in June. ITBS (Iowa Basic Skills test) Will be during the first week in May.

16 CURRICULUM GOALS READING Recognize upper and lower case letters. Identify initial and final consonant sounds. Recognize new words in ‘reading curriculum.’ Recognize syllables. Retell stories. Identify and read ‘color words.’

17 R EADING Identify rhyming words. Follow two and three step directions. Make predictions about the events in a story. Recognize and read sight words. Recognize nouns and verbs.

18 Curriculum Goals WRITING Write upper and lower case letters correctly. Write first and the last names. Generate story ideas and draw pictures to match.

19 Curriculum Goals WRITING Copy and write words in journals and note books. Write words with one syllable short vowels. Use sight words in simple sentences. Write few sentences on a given topic.

20 Curriculum Goals PHONICS Identify the initial and final sounds in words. Identify one-syllable short vowel. Accurately decode one-syllable nonsense words. Identify consonant blends (two letter blends): bl, cr, br, pr, sl, etc. Identify digraphs: ch, sh, th, wh, etc. Identify long vowel sounds

21 Curriculum Goals Oral skills Increasing vocabulary. Speaking in complete sentences. Using creative dramatics, puppetry, charts, poems or taped stories. Class discussions in groups.

22 Religion Children will learn about God and Jesus They will learn about families, themselves, and others. They will learn about religious holidays especially Christmas and Easter as well as the Holy Family They will learn about the Church and where Jesus grew up They will listen to Bible Stories from the Old Testament to learn about God’s love They will learn about miracles of Jesus and love by listening to parables. They will learn prayers and songs!

23 Curriculum Goals: Social Studies Social Studies will be integrated with all other subjects as well (especially art and reading) Students will understand the importance of themselves, their families, school, and community They will look at maps to identify places in a neighborhood or their location on a large globe. They will learn about the flag and other symbols of the United States as well as important holidays. Rules and responsibilities and importance of these.

24 Art Art will be based on all subjects Cutting Pasting Painting Folding Tracing Coloring Etc…

25 Computers Children will have the opportunity to use laptops. They will learn to manipulate the computer with basic functions like turning it on and off, moving the mouse and opening programs. They will also learn some typing. Children will use the laptops for educational websites, games, and programs! Children will use the Jumpstart Kindergarten Program!

26 Curriculum Goals MATHS Sorting groups and words for groups (more, less, set, pile, etc.) Counting, writing and recognizing numbers 1-20 Rote counting to 100 Place value- ones and tens (integrated with morning routine also) Ordinal numbers- first through tenth, last, first Compose and Decompose Numbers Add to a sum of 20, subtract facts through 10 Position words (top, middle, bottom, inside, etc.) Identify shapes and colors, and some 3D shapes Measurement and Graphing Application of math concepts in real world situations and word problems

27 C URRICULUM G OALS : M ATH Children will learn to use manipulatives to work with a variety of concepts Children will learn to integrate math with other subjects Children will play interactive games with their classmates Children will play games on the smartboard or on the computer to help reinforce lessons and skills Children will also use books and art to help illustrate and explain concepts

28 Curriculum Goals: Science Students will learn what a scientist is. Five Senses Weather (Along with morning routine) Seasons Living and Nonliving things Matter- Solid, Liquid, Gas

29 Science will be integrated with reading, math, and art! Children will do experiments or mini labs for certain topics. Science or social studies lessons will be done once a week and continued through other subjects.

30 A WORD TO PARENTS Get involved Help your child learn, such as reading together for 20 minutes a day. Volunteer for special class projects and as chaperones for field trips.

31 Together we will have a great school year.
