10 Datasets and Collections Dataset – e.g. a database or table of data generated by a research activity Collection – compilation of various research data objects – from a single research project, or – based on an intellectual theme 9

11 Open data is… Open data is data that can be freely used, re-used and redistributed by anyone - subject only, at most, to the requirement to attribute and sharealike. 10 http://opendatahandbook.org/guide/en/what-is-open-datahttp://opendatahandbook.org/guide/en/what-is-open-data/

12 Open data is… 1.Freely available to download in a reusable form. Large or complex data may be accessible via a service or facility that enables access in-situ or the download of sub-sets. 2.Licensed with minimal restrictions to reuse. 3.Well described with provenance and reuse information provided. 4.Available in convenient, modifiable and open formats. 5.Managed by the provider on an ongoing basis. 11 http://www.ands.org.au/discovery/opendata.html

13 Openness – access and rights Access Open – online, free and easy to download (or access), in a modifiable format. Mediated – requires registration to access online, or – contact principal investigator to gain access to the data Closed – no access allowed Rights Open licence – e.g. Creative Commons attribution (CC BY) licence – minimal restrictions for reuse, allows commercial reuse. Restrictive licences – e.g. CC Non Commercial No licence = No reuse permitted 12 http://www.ands.org.au/discovery/opendata.html
