NHYC: HIGH SCHOOL SAILING High School Sailing Program(s), NHYC Support, Relationship to Non-Calm Program, Optimization 2014 Update 1

What is HIGH SCHOOL SAILING Anyway? National – Governed by ISSA (Interscholastic Sailing Association) Founded 1930 Tim Hogan, NHYC, President 7 Regions – Northeast to South Atlantic to Northwest to Pacific Coast – Grown to over 476 Schools – Only High School Sport that has a National Championship Cressy-Singlehanded, Mallory-Fleet Racing, Baker-Team Race National Championship events are scheduled around the country and hosted by the Regions Both NHHS and CDM have won National Championships – ISSA and teams operate independent of US Sailing, Local Yacht Clubs and Other Sailing “Governing Bodies”. 100% Volunteer Organization Many teams are, however, supported by yacht clubs and other facilities ANY High School or Secondary School that can form a team and compete as long as the team meets ISSA minimum criteria (team members must be from school, enough team members to field a team, other) – Team must also operate in compliance with local and district High School rules for teams and be an approved “sport” of the high school (otherwise participants will not qualify for Letters, PE, Team Insurance, Time off to travel, Other). PCISA (Pacific Coast) governs our local teams: NHHS, CDM, Mater Dei and Sage Hill – 100 Teams (NHHS and CDM have 3 teams each) – Mike Segerbloom, NHYC(ish), Regional Director – High School Sailing Season spans September through June and consists of: 16 total regattas: 5 major, Pacific Coast Championship (qualifier for Nationals), plus 3 National Championships 2

About our LOCAL TEAMS 4 Local Teams – NHHS* – Based at NHYC – CDM* – Based at Sea Scout Base (at one time BYC) – Mater Dei – BYC Small team – Sage Hill – BCYC Small team *Compete for National Championship Almost Every Year (3 rd and 5 th last year) ALL teams have significant numbers of NHYC Non-Calms as sailors – However, DO NOT need to belong to a YC to be on team NHHS (NHYC) – 28 Team Members – Justin, NHYC NC Managing Director, Head Coach – David Blackman, NHYC, Team President – $800 per sailor, per semester, fee – 2 (3 in spring) day a week practice plus regatta weekends (September – June) – Can/Need to use own boat (not enough NHYC provided boats)… team provides sails CDM (Sea Scout Base) – 39 Team Members – Nate Dunham, NHYC Advanced Coach, Head Coach – David Dahl, NHYC, Team President – $1,000 per sailor, per semester, fee – 3 (plus JV) day a week practice, plus regatta weekends (September – June) – Boats provided by Sea Scout Base, team provides sails 3

NHYC /NON-CALM Support of NHHS Team NHYC Non-Calms are Team Members NHYC Coaching NHYC FJ’s, Trailers and Coach Boats NHHS TEAM CDM TEAM 4

NHYC / HIGH SCHOOL Sailing VITAL that NHYC / Non-Calm Support High School Sailing – Supports Non-Calm Mission and Vision – College Preparatory Program High school sailing is large part of College Prep – Supports older, more advanced sailors who become NHYC’s next potential membership class Keeps kids in sailing, part of team and engaged with their respective high schools Community support – Supports NHYC coaches with broadest coaching and teaching opportunity – Support NHYC tradition of excellence BUT Recognize HS Sailing Program is distinct from NHYC Non-Calm curriculum in several ways: – Team HS goal is winning, not necessarily participation or inclusiveness more often associated with NHYC Non- Calm Program Sitting on the beach, team cuts, coach has more authority, subject to high school rules, other are part of HS program – Team HS has a distinct and independent management structure and makes independent decisions based on what the team decides is in its best interests. Has its own separate corporate entity with its own insurance, other – Team members do not have to be and frequently are NOT NHYC members – Team parent leadership is not necessarily an NHYC member – Team (s) has its own budget and fundraising (tuition, annual banquet, NHSF and other donations) Team Reimburses NHYC annually for coaching Team Reimburses NHYC for 50% of repair costs on NHYC CFJ’s (approximately $900 in 2013) – NHYC owns 6 CFJ which the team can use (3 typically travel to regattas) 5

(some of the) Friction Points in HIGH SCHOOL/ NHYC Head Coach is never here to for my kids Team(s) gets a great deal and it isn’t fair. Head Coach doesn’t like me Sailing Director has 2 bosses me and the high school team which doesn’t report to me Team doesn’t like the Head Coach I can’t compete without buying a boat 6 Why is the club spending all the money on the HS

OPTIMIZING High School/ NHYC Current Operating Model is BEST MODEL – Ensures Best Coaching Available for Teams SDYC / Point Loma Model where coaching is independent (Steve Hunt) outside of SDYC is not available in Newport – Proven Successful over a long period of time based on team performance – Integrated with Non-Calm curriculum and support NC Advisory Board (Reporting to NHYC BofD) is visibly engaged on High School issues – Review and Approve HS Team NHYC Reimbursement level for coaches and equipment Ensure that amounts are fair, supportable and paid – Communicates with ALL Non-Calm constituents and stakeholders the role of Head Coach and Coach with High School Sailing and other NHYC Junior Sailing – Manage and allocate NHYC Resources: Coaching and Infrastructure Set clear expectations of time and availability within Non-Calm Constituency – Ensure a sense of fairness and support to ALL teams in bay where NHYC Non-Calms are integral – Be an open forum for clearing High School Sailing issues 7
