Student will learn: mole stoichiometry problems mass stoichiometry problems volume stoichiometry problems Student will learn: to calculate amount of reactants or amount produced when given a chemical reaction. Ws: 10.2 Honors Chemistry10.2 Academic Chemistry

Stoichiometry Five Steps to solving Stoichiometry problems 1. Write correct formulas, balanced chemical equations 2.Identify the given and unknown quantities. “Whatever units given in problem must be converted into Moles.” 3.Use the coefficients to “ set up mole ratios” 4. After solving the problem convert quantities to whatever units are required. ( typical grams). 5. Check that your answer is reasonable. Are the units correct?

ws. 10.0 N 2 + 3H 2 2NH 3 l.How many moles of ammonia will be produced if 2 mol nitrogen reacts? 2.How many moles of ammonia will be produced if 6 mol hydrogen reacts? 2.How many moles of nitrogen are required to produce 2.75 mol of ammonia?

2H 2 + O 2 2H 2 O 4. How many moles of water are produced when 5 moles of oxygen are used? 5.If 3 moles of water are produced, how many moles of hydrogen must be consumed? 6.How many moles of oxygen are required to react with 5 moles of hydrogen?

Remember: working problems everything must be in moles. 1) If 72.0 grams of O 2 are reacted, how many grams of NO will be produced? 4NH 3 + 5O 2 4NO + 6H 2 O

2. Given 75.0grams of iron (IV) sulfide, how many grams of sulfur dioxide are produced? 4FeS 2 + 11O 2 2Fe 2 O 3 + 8SO 2

3.If you react 120g of aluminum chloride with Calcium, how many grams of Al are produced? 2AlCl 3 + 3Ca 3CaCl 2 + 2 Al

4.How many moles of aluminum oxide will be formed from 27.4 moles of aluminum? 4Al + 3O 2 2Al 2 O 3

Mole conversion for gases One mole of any gas….occupies a volume of 22.4 liters. 1mol 22.4liters At STP….273K….1ATM

Find the mass of sugar required to produce 1.82L of carbon dioxide gas and the amount of oxygen in liters needed for the reaction….. C 6 H 12 O 6 + 5O 2 4C +6H 2 O + 2CO 2

11. How many liters of oxygen are necessary for the combustion of 425g of sulfur? S 8 + 8O 2 8SO 2

Air bags in a car inflate on impact. 52L of nitrogen is needed to inflate the bag. How many grams of Sodium azide is needed to in installed in the steering wheel capsule? 2NaN 3 2Na + 3N 2

Calculating each reactant and product 1. A Chemist wants to produce 15g of the precipitant Barium Oxide. How much of Barium Nitrate and Sodium Oxide must be mixed? Calculate the amount that will stay in solution after mixing.

Calculating each reactant and product 2.Sodium and Iron III Bromide under goes a single replacement reaction. Calculate the amount of each chemical if one uses 25.0 grams of Sodium.

Calculating each reactant and product 3. A Car uses 5 gallons of gas (C 8 H 18 ) on a trip. Calculate the amount of oxygen in liters required for combustion and amount of each exhaust in liters. (1 gallon= 7.6 lbs.) (1 lbs.= 453.59g)

Calculating each reactant and product 4. Phosphoric acid is poured onto Copper II Hydroxide. It goes thru an acid base reaction. If 50mL of water is produced how much of each chemical in grams was used in the reaction?
