2. What questions should I ask? When carrying out an historical enquiry you will need to use historical sources to find relevant information that will help give you answers. You will also need to analyse historical sources. When analysing historical sources historians will ask a number of questions. The same types of questions can be asked of any sources that historians or you have to deal with. When asking questions remember to ask the 5 Ws: WHO? WHAT? WHERE? WHEN? WHY? Study the sources that follow and answer the questions about them. Remember to choose just one correct statement.

9. Cardiff Bay Docks Return to Questions © Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales Cardiff developed after the opening of the Glamorganshire Canal in 1794. The canal saw iron and coal exported. Cardiff Bay was developed fully by the Marquess of Bute who built the docks which were opened in 1839. The Cardiff was developed further after 1855 when the railway between the Rhondda and docks. The East Dock was opened too. By 1913 over 10 million tons of coal were exported from Cardiff. By the 1920s the port went in to decline. By the 1980s much of the docklands were closed so in 1987 the Cardiff Bay Development Corporation was created to re-develop the area. A barrage was built in the 1990s. This transformed the area into what it is today.

15. Beaumaris Castle was built for Edward I after his conquest of Wales. Master James of St. George was employed to design Beaumaris castle. Beaumaris was part of the ‘iron ring’ of castles designed to ensure English control and prevent the Welsh rising up. The castle was built between 1295 and 1330. It was never completed to design but is still seen as a good example of a concentric castle. In 1403 the castle was captured by Owain Glyndwr. Glyndwr was rebelling against English rule.
