Committee for Special Education The Committee on Special Education (CSE) stores student special education records, opens all initial referrals and assigns a CSE case number for public school students. The CSE also manages all special education issues for non-public schools (private, parochial) and charter schools, including: Conducting evaluations. Offering placements (in conjunction with OSEPO). Conducting resolution sessions, mediations and impartial hearings. Managing non-attending students and Committee on Pre-School Education (CPSE) issues. This Committee is the gateway to obtaining special education services to help your child with learning problems. The CSE is made of up a team of individuals who know your child or his or her school. But the most important member of the CSE is the parent. The Team includes: Parent, School Pychologist, Regular Education Teacher, Special Education,

3. Resource Room Resource rooms are classrooms (sometimes smaller classrooms) where a special education program can be delivered to a student with a disability. It is for the student who qualifies for either a special class or regular class placement but needs some special instruction in an individualized or small group setting for a portion of the day. Individual needs are supported in resource rooms as defined by the student's IEP. Sometimes this form of support is called Resource and Withdrawal (or pull out). The child getting this type of support will receive some time in the resource room which refers to the withdrawal portion of the day and some time in the regular classroom with modifications and or accommodations which is the resource support in the regular classroom. This type of support helps ensure that the inclusional model is still in place.inclusional model

4. Inclusion Inclusion -- the idea that all children, including those with disabilities, should and can learn in a regular classroom Inclusive classes may require more than one teacher. And teachers and students may need specific technology to help students with disabilities perform better.

5. Early Intervention Early intervention applies to children of school age or younger who are discovered to have or be at risk of developing a handicapping condition or other special need that may affect their development. Early intervention consists in the provision of services such children and their families for the purpose of lessening the effects of the condition. Early intervention can be remedial or preventive in nature--remediating existing developmental problems or preventing their occurrence. Early intervention may focus on the child alone or on the child and the family together. Early intervention programs may be center-based, home-based, hospital-based, or a combination. Services range from identification--that is, hospital or school screening and referral services-- to diagnostic and direct intervention programs. Early intervention may begin at any time between birth and school age; however, there are many reasons for it to begin as early as possible

6. One to One Paraprofessionals A paraprofessional -- often referred to as an aide -- is a special-education worker who is not licensed to teach, but performs many duties both individually with students and organizationally in the classroom. providing instructional support in small groups; ✐ monitoring hallways, study hall, etc.; ✐ providing one-on-one instruction; ✐ meeting with teachers; ✐ modifying materials; ✐ collecting data on students; and ✐ implementing behavior management plans; ✐ providing personal care assistance.

7. General Education General Education classroom is designed for students who needs little or no supportive education services. There are usually 25-30 students in the classroom.

8. English As A Second Language ESL is a classroom designed for students who are English Language Learners. ESL students who are learning disabled are tested in their native language and in English to determined the kind of supportive services necessary to aid the student.

9. Home- schooling Homeschooling means learning outside of the public or private school environment. The word "home" is not really accurate, and neither is "school." For most families, their "schooling" involves being out and about each day, learning from the rich resources available in their community, environment, and through interactions with other families who homeschool. Essentially, homeschooling involves a commitment by a parent or guardian to oversees their child or teen's educational development. There are almost two million homeschoolers in this country.

10. District 75 District 75 provides citywide educational, vocational, and behavior support programs for students who are on the autism spectrum, severely emotionally challenged, and/or multiply disabled. District 75 consists of 56 school organizations, home and hospital instruction, and vision and hearing services. Our schools and programs are located at more than 350 sites in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island and Syosset, New York.

11. SEIT. Collaborates with nursery school directors and teachers to meet the child's needs Coordinates the child's educational goals with other providers, therapists, social workers and psychologists Participates in Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE) Provides opportunities for parents to partner in their child's education Children ages 3-5 years, who are classified by their school district's CPSE (Committee on Pre-school Special Education), are assigned SEIT services Children with: Speech/language delays Behavior difficulties Short attention span Impulsivity Low frustration tolerance Cognitive delays Motor delays. The SEIT teacher is the team coordinator and is responsible for sharing information with the child's regular classroom teacher, parents, and therapists. Special Education Itinerant Teacher (SEIT) services provides help to children from a special education teacher in a natural setting, such as a nursery school, summer camp or the child's home. Serving children and families, who reside in Nassau and Suffolk Counties, and New York City.
