20 20 BARRIERS TO BREAK DOWN 1.There is a vast difference between true Catholic Development and Fund-Raising. Unfortunately, many people do not understand the difference.

21 BARRIERS TO BREAK DOWN FUND-RAISING Basic Approach/Concept Panic reaction to negative deficits “Poor pitiful me” Crisis oriented Project oriented – year to year Temporary solutions Limited goals—short range Stopgap measures Hit and Miss CATHOLIC DEVELOPMENT Basic Approach/Concept Commitment of leaders Complete integrity Principal concern is quality. Transparent finances Happy “customers” Many reports of success 23

24 24 BARRIERS TO BREAK DOWN 2.Many Catholic institutions begin and continue the development efforts for all the wrong reasons, and they end up “nickel and diming” people. 3.There is no written Strategic Plan for true Catholic Development. 4.The development efforts are not built around “people fuel.”

25 25 BARRIERS TO BREAK DOWN 5.Many Catholic institutions continue to invite the same people over and over again. 6.It is important to understand that true Catholic Development takes 2-4 years to organize and implement. 7.Many “drives,” “appeals,” and “campaigns” are all built around $$$ goals and not people goals too.

26 26 BARRIERS TO BREAK DOWN 8.In order for development to really work, the leaders must get out and visit and speak with people and not hide behind e-mail and direct mail. 9.The leaders must step forward and let people know they are behind the development efforts 100%. 10. Catholic Development is vastly different than non-profit fund- raising.

28 28 USING THE CORRECT DEVELOPMENT LANGUAGE  Please understand, we (Catholic dioceses, parishes and schools) do not share a common language of what the words “development” and “stewardship” really mean. There is much confusion across the country.  ISPD continues to take the lead in everything we do to establish a language that is understandable and geared toward people becoming engaged, growing as stewards and sharing their gifts.

29 29 USING THE CORRECT DEVELOPMENT LANGUAGE  “Catholic Development,” “People Engagement,” and “Total Stewardship” have at their core the goal of inviting people to consider their role as a steward for life.  “Belonging leads to believing.”  “Development is the meaningful involvement of people in your mission and vision for the future.”

30 30 USING THE CORRECT DEVELOPMENT LANGUAGE  “Invite” rather than “ask.”  “Invest” rather than “give.”  Invite the gifts rather than “give me your money.”  Remember the many gifts that people could possibly share – prayer, expertise, time, financial resources, connections, skills and more.  How many people did we involve as much as how much $$ did we raise?

31 31 USING THE CORRECT DEVELOPMENT LANGUAGE  “We invite you to consider the gifts you may wish to share” rather than, “Can you make a contribution or “write/cut us a check.”  Don’t “tap” someone for $$$. Catholic Development is not an induction ceremony.  Please do not “hit someone up” for money.  This is our development officer rather than, “He is in charge of fund-raising.”

32 32 USING THE CORRECT DEVELOPMENT LANGUAGE  “We will create our vision and plans for the future by inviting your input,” rather than, “This is what some school leaders have decided.”  “Our overall goal is to build our Faith Community to be even stronger than it is.”  We must talk with the “customer.”  Catholic Development is inclusive and not exclusive.

33 33 USING THE CORRECT DEVELOPMENT LANGUAGE  “That will never work here.” “We’re different.” “We tried that once; it didn’t work then and won’t work now.” These are all statements that will stall most Catholic Development creativity.  Remember the 60-40 rule when inviting people to become involved. Invite 60% who are new to your Catholic institution, and 40% who are already involved.  “Process” rather than “program”

41 41 SAMPLE PRESENTATION BY A CATHOLIC LEADER This is an exciting time in the history of our (parish/school/diocese). As we approach the end of the first decade of the 21 st century, we find that while there are many areas, programs, and ministries that are working well, we also have many opportunities to improve as we move into the future. What a wonderful opportunity for positive change!

42 42 SAMPLE PRESENTATION BY A CATHOLIC LEADER We would like to announce the beginning of a new process, a new shift in our culture, and possibly a unique way of thinking here at (name of school, parish, diocese). Over the next number of months, parish and school leaders will be introducing and implementing a new, vibrant Catholic Development effort that will seek to invite, involve and engage people throughout our faith community.

43 43 SAMPLE PRESENTATION BY A CATHOLIC LEADER In a way, we look upon this as a new beginning, a renaissance, where we will build upon the strengths of the past and the initiatives of the present. As we move forward, we will be guided by two themes: 1. Every step of the way, we will seek to meaningfully invite and involve you as we create dynamic plans for the future; and, 2. We will invite you to help us reach out to hundreds in order to build a stronger faith community.

44 44 SAMPLE PRESENTATION BY A CATHOLIC LEADER The first step we will take will be to create a Development Core Team of 15-18 parish and school leaders that will move these new efforts forward. One of their first action items will be to assess our Catholic Development, Total Stewardship and/or People Engagement efforts in our parish and school. They will look at certain areas such as:  Are we a warm and welcoming faith community?

45 45 SAMPLE PRESENTATION BY A CATHOLIC LEADER  How well do we communicate with each other?  How effective is our leadership?  Do we reach out and seek input from our parish and school families?  Are we concerned about building a stronger faith community or do we just want to remain “status quo”?  Do we equally invite the gifts of prayer, involvement and financial participation?  Do our families get the opportunity to do what they do best?

46 46 SAMPLE PRESENTATION  Do the leaders here take a genuine interest in others?  How effective is our web site?  How many of our families are actively involved in our parish and school?  Do we have a plan for the future?  Are we ready to “raise the bar” and move to new heights? These and other areas will be assessed first by our Core Team. As part of this Assessment, we will also turn to you – as parishioners, as parents.

47 47 SAMPLE PRESENTATION BY A CATHOLIC LEADER All of you will be invited to share your thoughts and ideas in a parish and school wide survey. We will randomly invite some of you to input sessions in order to seek your opinions. Based upon all of this input, we will create a written Strategic Plan for Catholic Development and Total Stewardship. Many of you will be invited for input.

A major goal behind all of this is to advance our school/parish/diocese in many areas:  Strategic Planning  Communication  People involvement

This effort will take the work, wisdom and gifts of many. We invite you to consider what role you will play as we gear up to advance this institution into the second decade of the 21 st century.
