5 LessonLearning outcomesActivity 1 Label parts of a plant Plant a seed Ask children to suggest what is needed for seeds to begin to grow. Read ‘My Bean Diary’. Discuss what they are going to look for when they observe their seeds and help children to make a day-by- day record of their observations by taking photos. In pairs, plant a seed, and keep in in various locations for comparison, e.g light, dark etc. On IWB, label parts of a plant. 2 Understand that there are different plants in the environment Walk round the school or visit the local park to identify where plants are growing. Help children to make a brief record of what they find using a table prepared for them. Discuss findings. 3 Understand where new plants come from Recognise variety of seeds from which plants grow Review children's understanding of where new plants come from. Use simple reference books, internet and a series of pictures of plants in flower and with fruits and explain that the fruits which contain the seeds are produced from the flower. Introduce the term 'reproduce'. Challenge children to find the seeds in some plants. Over several weeks… To make observations of plants growing. Every week, check the plants. Compare the ones from different locations. Re-read the ‘My Bean Diary’ to check progress. 14 Create a documentary about their plant. Children work in pairs to create a documentary using their photos about their plant. Use ‘My Bean Diary’ for reference if they are unsure. 6 During this unit of work: Children use the Interactive Whiteboard to drag and drop labels and definitions to the plant picture. Research plants on internet. Give children specific web addresses. Create documentary using movie maker. Prior Learning: Build on prior experiences Safe use of the internet How to create and format text. How to add pictures to a document.

7  Teachers who already have images or video on their computer for a subject can create a high -quality movie in a matter of minutes.  Allows children to paste and add images found on the internet.  They can add animations, sound or music to the movie.  Movie Maker is a free, user-friendly, versatile tool.  Children can upload videos so they can viewed anytime.  It’s easy to use, thus keeping the focus on learning the content, not on the tool itself. (Bird, B. 2006)  “It offers enough basic features to get the job done but stops short of the abundant options and effects found in other programs.” ( pcmag.com,2003)
