2 What is the consumer protection act? For many products, society has laws and standards that the designer must meet. These help to protect the users, by specifying that products meet certain requirements and have suitable levels of safety. The Laws also allow consumers to get their money back if goods are found to be faulty or if products do not perform in the way claimed by the manufacturer. This act is given to the manufacturer to ensure products meet the certain requirements and have a suitable level of safety. If goods are faulty or not the same as they were advertised the law allows consumers to get their money back.

Part I of the act (product liability directive) came into force on 1 st may 1988 Part II of the act containing consumer safety provisions, came into force on 1 October 1987. These provisions apply throughout the UK. The law can protect the public by: prohibiting the manufacture and supply of unsafe goods making the manufacturer or seller of a defective product responsible for damage it causes allowing local councils to seize unsafe goods and suspend the sale of suspected unsafe goods prohibiting misleading price indications
