Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Capacity Building in Central and Eastern Europe: Research and Innovation Management Education and Training Innovation 2005 November 30, 2005 Prague, Czech Republic

2 Introduction Sandor G. Vari, MD International Research and Innovation Management Burns and Allen Research Institute Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Los Angeles, CA, USA

3 scientifically advanced academically oriented Innovation Management and Technology Transfer Training (IMTT TM ) The Central and Eastern European Countries are but innovation has not been sufficiently rewarded in their transition to the free market system.

4 Intellectual property produced by the academic sector continues to be taken without fair compensation because the research and academic communities are not well educated about research and innovation management. Research and Innovation Management

5 Cedars-Sinai Medical Center views this research, innovation management and technology transfer collaboration as a long-term collaboration which is intended to help build and enhance: innovation management capabilities internal expertise in Central and Eastern European Universities on a fast track. Innovation Management and Technology Transfer Training Program in the Central and East European Countries

6  In 1998, the US Government and the European Union entered into a research collaboration arrangement.  In 1999, Cedars-Sinai started to explore potential collaborations with European Medical Centers and Biomedical Research Institutes.  Cedars-Sinai, in conjunction with the EU Research and Technology Development Division, developed several project proposals.  Funding for such collaborations could be available through the NIH, NSF and the Fogarty International Center. Partnership with CEE Universities for Innovation Management and Technology Transfer (IMTT) Training

7  February 2001, the first meeting between Central & Eastern European Countries and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center took place.  September 2001, Cedars-Sinai and four Hungarian Universities entered into Research and Technology Transfer Agreements and new partners from other Central European Countries were introduced to the project.  2003 CSMC implemented the “Bridges in Life Sciences Program™”.  2002-2005 Cedars-Sinai and additional CEE Universities entered into Research and Technology Transfer Agreements from Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia. Partnership with CEE Universities for Innovation Management and Technology Transfer (IMTT) Training

Bridges in Life Sciences Workshops Goals:  Organize a regional networking forum for CEE.  Enhance research opportunities/adapted to changing needs.  Create new networking structure „Bridge” to create thematic or multidisciplinary networks.  Innovation management and technology transfer training. Innovation Management and Technology Transfer Training (IMTT TM )

12 STRATEGY Introduce: Education and Training Involve: Innovation and Technology Transfer Partnerships Implement: Innovation Management Infrastructure in Universities and Academic Institutions International Research and Innovation Management

13 Research and Innovation Management Education and Training ( RIMET TM ) Innovation Management and Technology Transfer (IMTT TM )

14 PHASE 1: Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (CSMC) in 2001 has developed the Innovation Management and Technology Transfer (IMTT TM ) Program. PHASE 2: In 2005, in order to enhance the effectiveness of the project, CSMC implemented the Research and Innovation Management Training Program (RIMET TM ) to train: scientists physicians healthcare managers for research and technology transfer management. PHASE 3: Next step is focused on building self-sufficiency of the CEE Universities by building a Strategic Alliance and Intellectual Property or “IP” Warehouse. TM Innovation Management and Technology Transfer Training Program in the Central and East European Countries

15 PHASE 1  Strategic Alliance and Networking: —Creation of Patent Portfolio —Training  Partner’s role: Equalizing Infrastructure  CSMC’s role: Training and Management

16 PHASE 1 Innovation Management and Technology Transfer Training (IMTT TM )

17 PHASE 1 Innovation Management and Technology Transfer Training (IMTT TM )  During the course of the IMTT Program, Cedars-Sinai and its CEE partners focused their attention on identifying the true training needs in the partner universities and institutions.  As a part of the IMTT on-site training at the universities trainees develop skills that will enable them to bring back a set of best practices which will fit the organizational structure of their university.

18 PHASE 2 “Train the Trainers”  Building Business Strategy: —Creation of Independent Organization —Training of Partners  Partner’s role: Independent Technology Transfer Management  CSMC’s role: Support role

19 PHASE 2

20 PHASE 2 Research, Innovation Management Education and Training (RIMET) CSMC IMTT Training Model  Innovation Management and Technology Transfer (IMTT) Training INTRODUCE, INVOLVE, IMPLEMENT  Research Management Training  Human Subject Research Training  Clinical Trial Management Training  Graduate Medical Education  Ph.D. Program in Economics and Jurist Doctor (JD) with a Concentration in Intellectual Property

21  In addition, by improving their own competency in the area, they can then help other Central European Universities to implement Research and Innovation Management Programs.  The need for skilled trainers continues to grow in order to meet the challenges and success of the Strategic Alliance for Research and Innovation Management and IP Warehousing. PHASE 2 Innovation Management and Technology Transfer Training (IMTT TM )

22 Phase 3  Business Enterprise : —Developing Consortium  Partner’s role: Self Management of Inventions  CSMC’s role: Technology Transfer Outsource

23 Phase 3

24 PHASE 3: Strategic Alliance with Central & Eastern European Universities Building a shared patent portfolio– a so called “IP Warehouse™”– by CSMC and its Central and East European partner universities strengthens the presence of the partners in the Global Market. The strategic alliance allows each partner to receive a fair share of value from technologies created by the talented researchers and scientists throughout Central and East Europe.

25 Three Wheels of the CSMC – CEE Strategic Alliance Capacity Building Implement Research and Innovation Management Infrastructure Increase Scientific and Innovation Output Continuing Education Research Networking Build IP Warehouse Bring CEE Partners’ IP to the Global Market “The only way to win in this business is to have alliances”
