1 WELCOME TO THE NEW MILFORD HIGH SCHOOL LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER OVERVIEW OF RESOURCES

2 OUR RESOURCES LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER BOOKS AND E-BOOKS SUBSCRIPTION DATABASES MAGAZINES AND NEWSPAPERS

3 The Basics Mrs. Keesing is the library media specialist, and Mrs. Kriss is the part-time library clerk. We are open from 7:35-3:30 daily. The facility is for reading, researching, and collaborating on school work. Please respect others by speaking quietly. Food and drink are not allowed in the library media center, except during several special events.

4 BOOKS Reference –Generally non-circulating –By special arrangement, may circulate overnight E-Books **NEW for the 2007-2008 school year** –Accessible 24/7 –Reference sources on a variety of subjects Nonfiction –Located in two sections of the library media center Fiction –Separated into young adult and regular fiction Both fiction and nonfiction –Circulate for 28 days –Ask to renew – it is usually ok –Late fee = $.10 per book per day late

5 BELS and BCCLS BELS –Online catalog for our school and other schools BCCLS –Online catalog for searching the public library system

6 ACCESSING BELS Start at the school district homepage, www.newmilfordschools.org Click on the tab for high school and then on the tab for media center On the left side, click on library catalog Click on BELS, then on BELS Library Catalog above the dog, then on New Milford High School

7 USING BELS Defaults: –Search catalog of the New Milford High School Library Media Center –Perform keyword search Other options: –Search other school catalogs –Highlight our collection –Perform title and author searches –Search by a particular material type

10 See Call # View other schools’ holdings Check status

11 USING BCCLS From the library media center page, click on library catalogs Select BCCLS From the BCCLS homepage, you can: –Search the catalogs for about 80 public libraries –View holdings on your library card –Click on the special section for teens

12 Change default Enter search Check your card

13 Interlibrary Loan (ILL) You may request books from other BELS and BCCLS libraries if: – You have a valid public library card in your own name –The card is free of fines Deliveries: Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays You may return any public library items that you or your family has borrowed to our school library Allow a week to receive items (they may arrive sooner) ILL is provided free by the State of New Jersey

14 INTERLIBRARY LOANS, BELS In BELS, click under a title to see which libraries own the item you want Click on “Request This Item”, and enter your library card number Or, ask Mrs. Keesing for your card number Complete the form and click submit

15 INTERLIBRARY LOAN, BCCLS Request an interlibrary loan form from Mrs. Keesing and fill it out She will process your request –That material will arrive at school in a week (or sooner) You may also enter your library card number to request material yourself –That material will be sent to New Milford Public Library for you to pick up

16 NEWSPAPERS New York Times, Monday-Friday The Record, Monday-Friday Newspapers remain in the Library Media Center for the day After school, you may request to take home that day’s paper (or sections of it)

17 MAGAZINES Current issues are in the magazine rack Current issues stay in the Library Past issues –may circulate for two weeks –usually stored for two years We have a variety of magazines –Some may offer useful information for school assignments –Some are of general reading interest

18 SUBSCRIPTION DATABASES Excellent resources! –Updated regularly –Written by authorities in the subject –Accurate, balanced coverage –Text often enhanced by graphics and charts –Many allow you to save articles in a folder Colleges expect students to use databases Accessible via remote location

19 2007-2008 DATABASES EBSCO –comprehensive magazine database Discovering Collection –science, literature, history, biography, social studies Issues: Understanding Controversy & Society –contemporary issues –various perspectives Opposing Viewpoints –contemporary issues –variety of resources

20 MORE 2007-2008 DATABASES American History –exploration of people, places, and events Today’s Science –wide spectrum of science and math topics –Current science with underlying concepts Facts on File –databases include health, careers, history, science, and more Teen Health & Wellness –geared specifically towards teenagers –nutrition, family life, relationships, drugs, alcohol, and more Encyclopedia Britannica –easy-to-use, comprehensive encyclopedia
