We all know 50 cent and how many times he got shot. But do we know that if he had gotten shot in the back he could have hit nerves that could have paralyzed him for life? This is because of the nervous system Lets look a bit deeper.

The Nervous System Biology 11 Danielle MacDougall Evan MacKinnon Mike Knox

Nerves The two types of nerves are: Sensory Nerves ( brain to spinal cord) ( let us feel things) Motor Nerves (messages to other parts) ( let us move)

Autonomic Nerves The two parts are… Sympathetic nerves -‘flight or fight’-Increases heart rate (Phobias) Parasympathetic nerves- relaxed ‘ rest and digest’

The Forebrain The Forebrain is… The largest most complex part of the brain it consists of the Cerebrum. In the forebrain there is also the thalamus, hypothalamus, and pituitary gland. The forebrain has 4 lobes. ( front 2 = storage areas)

The Midbrain Responsible for… Controlling the sensory processes. In between the forebrain and midbrain

The Hindbrain Functions… Motor activity, posture, equilibrium and sleep patterns Regulates unconscious but essential functions ; breathing and blood circulation

Cerebrum Helps with.. Language Communication Emotions Movements Memory Actually know as the telencephalon

Diseases and disorders Tourette Syndrome A neurological disorder tics= involuntary movement either physically or vocally Autism Spectrum Disorder Abnormal biology and chemistry in the brain, not properly developed, communicational + social= lacking

Diseases and Disorders ctn… Parkinson’s Disease A progressive disorder of the nervous system A disease that effects the central nervous system and impairs the motor nerves and speech

Drugs and their effect Marijuana Chemical in plant, THC ("delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol“) that act on some of the parts of the brain. Those parts of the brain control your memory, movement, perception and concentration. That is why when you consume low to medium doses you feel ; relaxed, sleepy, less coordination, altered sense of time and date
