3 Anarchy Absence of government; a state of lawlessness due to the absence of power

4 Autocracy a form of government in which the political power is held by a single self- appointed ruler…similar to a dictatorship. Best example is Cuba: Fidel Castro appointed himself leader of they country.

5 Theocracy is a form of government in which a god or deity is the supreme ruler Example would be Ancient Greece and their many Gods.

6 Oligarchy is a form of government where political power effectively rests with a small elite group A modern example of oligarchy could be seen in South Africa during the 20th century. Here, the basic characteristics of oligarchy are particularly easy to observe, since the South African form of oligarchy was based on racism

7 Limited or Constitutional Monarchy Parliamentary system monarch is the head of state, but prime minister is head of government Example would be England.

8 Absolute Monarchy where the king and queen have absolute power over everything has total power over his or her people and land Example would be Saudi Arabia

9 Totalitarianism is a concept used to describe political systems where a state regulates nearly every aspect of public and private life. Only one real government and no other options. Example would be China.

10 Dictatorship a form of government that has the power to govern without consent of those being governed Example would be Cuba, Iraq, North Korea

11 Aristocracy A form of government where whoever has the most status and influence rules Example would be Ancient Greece.

12 Democracy a form of government in which the power is held by the people under a free electoral system Example would be America

13 Federalism is the system in which the power to govern is shared between the national and state governments Example is America

14 Direct Democracy Athens, Greece 5 th century B.C. a form of government in which laws are made directly by citizens Town Meetings- regularly to discuss ways to make life better for their community

15 Republic Rome a government in which representatives were elected to make laws Colonial legislatures- resembled the Roman form of government

16 Activity: You are to design a government using one of the systems that we have went over in class except democracy. Be as creative as you like. Give Details about your country: Name, Leaders Title, Roles of the citizens, how are leaders elected, life in your country, and a flag. Must be close to a full page. This will be for a grade. There is no wrong answer use your imagination. Final Product will be presented to the group.
