3 O2 Cylinder Valve (On/Off)
The O2 valve must be opened immediately AFTER donning the facemask. O2 is wasted if the valve is turned on sooner

4 Emergency Bypass Valve Button
This valve for emergency use only If sufficient O2 is not available to inhale a full breath, the demand valve may not be functioning properly Push the Bypass Valve button for about 2 seconds to add O2 directly to the breathing chamber Repeat the use of the Bypass as required

5 Emergency Bypass Valve Button
If it is necessary to frequently use the Bypass valve, the user must exit the contaminated area immediately and have the BioPak 240 serviced CAUTION: EXCESSIVE USE OF THE EMERGENCY BYPASS VALVE WILL SIGNIFICANTLY DECREASE THE DURATION OF THE BIOPAK 240. THIS VALVE SHOULD ONLY BE USED FOR EMERGENCIES. IT WILL NOT CLEAR FOGGED FACEMASKS.

6 Alarm Whistle Alarm whistle sounds at 92 dB for approximately seconds when the O2 cylinder pressure drops to approximately 25 % of its service capacity (about PSIG). When alarm sounds, the user has about one hour of working time left in the BioPak 240

7 Alarm Whistle CAUTION: ONE TIME ALARM FOR APPROXIMATELY ONE MINUTE! THE ENTIRE TEAM SHALL PREPARE TO TERMINATE WORK ALLOWING SUFFICIENT TIME TO EXIT THE AREA.

8 Start-up Alarm Chirp When the apparatus is turned on, the user should hear a “chirp” from the alarm to signal that it is working properly. A chirp also should be heard after the apparatus is turned off if more than 750 PSIG is left in the O2 cylinder.

9 Pressure Gauge The BioPak is provided with a luminescent chest mounted pressure gauge, located on the shoulder strap, which the user can observe to determine approximate service life remaining.

11 Pressure Gauge It is normal for the Pressure Gauge to take up to 1 minute to come up to full pressure due to the flow restrictor in the gauge line. If gauge lines were to be severed, the gauge line flow restrictor would limit flow to 0.5 LPM to allow safe immediate exit from the hazardous area. YOU MUST IMMEDIATELY LEAVE THE HAZARDOUS AREA IF A GAUGE LINE HAS BEEN SEVERED!

12 PRE-USE INSPECTION Obtain BioPak 240 and cooling cannister
Make sure that a valid Turn-Around Maintenance Tag is attached to the O2 cylinder valve. This tag assures that the following procedures have been performed: The absorbent canister has been filled with fresh CO2 absorbent and inserted into the breathing chamber The O2 cylinder has been pressurized to 2700 – 3000 PSIG as indicated on the O2 cylinder gauge. The BioPak 240 has been flow tested. The alarm whistle functions properly The facemask lens has been cleaned and coated with anti-fogging agent. The coolant canister has been frozen and retrieved from the freezer.

13 PRE-USE INSPECTION If the Turn-Around Maintenance Tag is missing, The BioPak 240 must be completely inspected to assure that all steps of a Turn-Around Maintenance have been properly completed. The LimePak Absorbent MUST be replaced if the Turn-Around Tag is missing.

14 Inspect BioPak 240 All connections are tight
Breathing tubes with hose coupler or facemask in place. WARNING: IF THE TURN-AROUND MAINTENANCE TAG IS PRESENT ON THE BIOPAK 240, BUT YOU SUSPECT THAT THE BIOPAK 240 WAS NOT SEALED PROPERLY, REPLACE THE LIMEPAK ABSORBENT! IF A HOSE IS FOUND OPEN TO THE ATMOSPHERE, DO NOT USE THE BIOPAK; REPLACE WITH THE LIMEPAK ABSORBENT!

15 Inspect BioPak 240 Insure O2 cylinder gauge is reading 2700 – 3000 PSIG Install pre-frozen coolant canister Place BioPak 240 unit face up (logo up) Unlatch and remove upper housing Insert and secure coolant canister with velcro strap Reposition and latch upper housing

16 Inspect BioPak 240 Coat the inside of the facemask with the antifogging cloth and lightly buff the lens with a clean soft cloth until it is clear enough to see through. Excessive buffing may diminish the anti-fog qualities. When properly buffed, enough anti-fog should remain on the inside lens so that your finger will leave a streak if you wipe it across the lens. The BioPak 240 is now ready for service.

17 Donning the BioPak 240 Place BioPak 240 face down (logo seal down) with top toward you Lengthen the shoulder straps so that the free ends extend two to three inches Grasp the body of the BioPak 240 approximately midway between the top and bottom. The shoulder straps should be outside your arms.

18 Donning the BioPak 240 Raise unit over head, bend and guide shoulder straps onto shoulders. NOTE: BE CAREFUL TO AVOID BACK INJURY! Lean forward slightly and tighten shoulder straps by pulling down and away from the body as you straighten up. Buckle and adjust waist strap firmly on your hips. Loosen the shoulder straps to let weight of the BioPak 240 rest on your hips, not your shoulders. Connect the chest strap; do not over tighten because it will constrict breathing. NOTE THE BIOPAK 240 CAN ALSO BE DONNED USING THE “COAT” METHOD.

19 DON FACEMASK Before donning, loosen two upper and two lower straps completely Place harness over head Center your chin comfortably in the facemask chin cup Holding facemask on your face with one hand, snug the bottom strap on one side, then repeat operation for the bottom strap on the other side of the facemask Tighten both upper straps by pulling gently and simultaneously DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN THE FACEMASK, THIS CAN LEAD TO MASK LEAKAGE AND USER DISCOMFORT – EXTREME HEADACHE! CAUTION: A POOR FACEMASK SEAL WILL CAUSE A SIGNIFICANT DECREASE IN DURATION AND PROTECTION FACTORS. BEARDS, OR EYE GLASSES THAT BREAK THE FACEMASK SEAL AREA AGAINST OSHA AND MSHA REGULATIONS AND VOID THE NIOSH APPROVAL OF THE BIOPAK 240.

20 DON FACEMASK Perform negative pressure check by blocking the inhalation port with your hand and inhaling. If you cannot inhale, mask fits good. However, if mask leaks when you inhale with the inhalation port covered, adjust mask for better fit or check exhalation valve. Perform positive pressure check by covering the exhalation port with your hand and exhaling. If you cannot inhale, mask fits good. The facemask should be pushed from your face by the pressure of your exhalation. If the mask is not pushed away, check the inhalation valve.

21 CONNECT THE FACEMASK Remove hose coupler and store in carrying case

22 Donning the BioPak 240 Perform negative pressure check by blocking the inhalation port with your hand and inhaling. If you cannot inhale, mask fit is good. However, if mask leaks when you inhale with the inhalation port covered, adjust mask for better fit or check the exhalation valve. Perform positive pressure check by covering the exhalation port with your hand and exhaling. The facemask should be pushed from your face by the pressure of your exhalation. If the mask is not pushed away, check the inhalation valve

23 Donning the BioPak 240 Connect the facemask.
Remove hose coupler or red caps, and store them in the carrying case. Connect inhalation hose (marked with green tape) to the mask. Connect exhalation hose to the mask.

24 Donning the BioPak 240 After the mask is donned and fully connected, open the oxygen cylinder valve fully counterclockwise and back ¼ turn. Listen for alarm whistle "chirp." If alarm whistle does not work, obtain another BioPak.

25 Donning the BioPak 240 Verify chest-mounted pressure of PSIG. Note: It is normal for the gauge to take up to a minute and a half to come up to full pressure due to the flow Restrictor in the gauge line Tear off the Turn-Around Maintenance Tag.

26 Speaking Diaphragm Use
Talk a little louder than normal. Don't shout. Enunciate words. Speak clearly and slowly DO NOT TALK FAST.

27 Normal BioPak Operation.
The user must be familiar with the normal conditions that occur while. Using the BioPak 240. Depending on the activity level of the user and the surrounding temperature, the BioPak 240 may provide somewhat warmer and more humid gas than conventional open-circuit, pressure demand type devices. The BioPak operates at approximately 100% humidity. The moist breathing gas mixture also helps to keep the user's mucous membranes from drying out. This makes the wearer more comfortable and prevents dry, sore throats that are often a side effect of using air bottles

28 Emergency Operation The Emergency Bypass Valve is used manually to supply oxygen to the breathing chamber in the event of failure of the Demand Valve or Flow Restrictor. If inhalation resistance increases due to the depletion of the breathing gas supply in the breathing chamber, add a 2-second burst of oxygen by pushing the Bypass Valve button. Add additional bursts as required to maintain an adequate supply of breathing gas.

29 Emergency Operation WARNING: The Bypass Valve is intended for emergencies only and WILL NOT clear facemask fogging. WASTEFUL use of the Bypass Valve seriously reduces the duration of the BioPak 240.

30 Emergency Actions Equipment failure, such as a blocked line.
Try Bypass, exit area and obtain another BioPak.

31 Emergency Actions Severed pressure gauge. Exit area and obtain another BioPak.

32 Emergency Actions "Over-Actuation" of Demand Valve inside BioPak. Leak in system - exit area and obtain new BioPak. Bad facemask seal - adjust facemask fit.

33 User warning symptoms that require immediate attention.
Emergency Actions User warning symptoms that require immediate attention. Any feeling of nausea, dizziness or illness. Rapid pressure drop on chest-mounted gauge. Any difficulty inhaling or exhaling. Smoke or other contaminants in the facemask. If any of these signs are present, EXIT THE CONTAMINATED AREA IMMEDIATELY !

34 Emergency Actions Regulator failure. The regulator is designed to fail open. While extremely rare, regulator failure may be detected as excess pressure in the facemask and constant venting of excess pressure by the Relief Valve with every breath. This will result in a drastic decrease in available working time. If in the rare instance the regulator were to fail open, close the oxygen cylinder immediately, then on every fifth breath, open and close the cylinder momentarily as you exit the area. A failing regulator will also be identified by a high flow during the "Flow Test" part of the "Turnaround Maintenance."

35 Doffing the BioPak 240 WARNING: Most breathing apparatus malfunctions are directly traceable to careless handling after use. Many years of trouble-free operation are possible if reasonable care is given to the BioPak 240. Coat Method. Close oxygen cylinder valve. Remove facemask by pushing forward on two lower release buckles and continue pushing forward and upward to lift the facemask over the head. Unfasten chest and waist straps and lean forward slightly at the waist. Loosen one shoulder strap, and then allow the other shoulder strap to slide from the other shoulder while swinging the BioPak 240 around your front. Remove unit and set it down.

Over-The-Head Method Close oxygen cylinder valve.. Remove facemask by pushing, forward on the two lower release buckles and continue pushing forward and upward to lift the facemask over the head. Unfasten chest and waist straps. Loosen shoulder straps. Grab carrying strap and lift BioPak 240 over your head.

37 Perform the Turn-Around Maintenance as outlined in Section Ell before reuse. Store the unit in its carrying case or other safe location. DO NOT STORE IN AN EXCESSIVELY WARM OR COLD ENVIRONMENT (store between 32°F and 85°F, O°C and 30°C).

38 TURN-AROUND MAINTENANCE
Perform the Turn-Around Maintenance procedures as soon as possible after each use of the BioPak 240 as outlined below.

39 A. BioPak 240 Disassembly Before disassembling the BioPak 240, make sure the outside of the BioPak 240 is clean, so that the inside of the breathing gas loop is not contaminated. Clean the harness and exterior parts of the BioPak 240 with a sponge and a mild soap solution, then wipe dry. a. Place the BioPak on a flat surface and remove the case cover. b. Slide the breathing chamber cover snap latches away from the four retainer pins and remove the cover by pressing it up around the edges with your fingers and down with your thumbs on the breathing hose connections (using the same method to remove the absorbent canister as illustrated below). DO NOT PRY UP ON THE LID WITH A SCREWDRIVER. This will result in damage to the 0-ring and Breathing Chamber. c. Lift the carbon dioxide absorbent canister from the BioPak 240 by pressing it up around the edges of the plastic rim with your fingers and down with your thumbs on the breathing chamber.

40 A. BioPak 240 Disassembly d. Remove the canister cover by sliding the cover snap latch away from the retainer set pin and lifting the cover. e. Remove the filter pad, empty the contents of the canister into the trash (use LimePak is essentially just limestone) and wipe the canister clean of particles. THE ABSORBENT MUST BE REPLACED EACH TIME THE BIOPAK 240 HAS BEEN USED OR THE OXYGEN CYLINDER REQUIRES REFILLING. The absorbent has a dye indicator in it for use in medical applications. This dye may turn the foam pad purple, but this is normal. USE THE ABSORBENT ONLY ONCE AND THEN THROW IT AWAY! BY THE TIME IT HAS CHANGED COLOR, THE ABSORBENT HAS LONG SINCLE LOST ITS ABILITY TO ADEQUATELY REMOVE CARBON DIOXEDE! DO NOT REUSE THE ABSORBENT!

41 A. BioPak 240 Disassembly f. After removing the carbon dioxide absorbent canister, check the sealing 0Rings inside and outside perimeter of the absorber well for abrasions or cuts. Wipe the O-Rings with a clean cloth to be sure they are clean and dry, and then apply a thin film of lubricant to them. CAUTION: CRISTO-LUBE (MCG-111) OR SILICONE (DOW-111) LUBRICANT MAY BE USED ON THESE LARGE O-RINGS. DO NOT USE AN OIL-BASED LUBRICANT. DO NOT USE DOW-111 ON HIGH PRESSURE OXYGEN LINES. Maintaining adequate lubrication on the large O-Rings will help assure proper performance and prevent premature failure g. Wipe out any particles of carbon dioxide absorbent remaining in the canister well. NOTE: IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE OXYGEN CYLINDER REMAIN IN THE DIOPAK 240 THROUGHOUT DISINFECTING PROCEDURES. THIS WILL PREVENT WATER AND CONTAMINANTS FROM ENTERING THE REGULATOR DURING DISINFECTING (a regulator dust cap is available).

42 SCOTT AV-2000 FULL FACEPIECE
WARNING: THE AV-2000 FULL FACEPIECE ASSEMBLU IS INTENDED FOR USE ON RESPIRATORS WHICH MAY SUPPORT HUMAN LIFE IN HAZARDOUS ATMOSPHERES. FAILURE TO READ, UNDERSTAND, AND CAREFULLY FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS WHEN CLEANING, DISASSEMBLING OR REASSEMBLING THE FACEPIECE OR ASSOCIATED HEAD HARNESS ASSEMBLY AND/OR FAILURE TO CHECK YOUR WORK AS INSTRUCTED HEREIN MAY RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.

43 NORMAL CLEANING TOOLS REQUIRED: MATERIALS REQUIRED:
WASHING IMPLEMENTS (SPONGE, SOFT CLOTH ETC.) MATERIALS REQUIRED: MILD SOAP OR DETERGENT AND A DISINFECTING SOLUTION (A 70% SOLUTION OF ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL IS RECOMMENDED)

44 CAUTION CERTAIN CLEANING AND DISINFECTING AGENTS SUCH AS QUATERNARY AMMONIUM COMPONDS (AMMONIUM CHLORIDES) MAY CAUSE DAMAGE, DETERIORATION OR ACCLERATED AGING TO PARTS OF THE AV USE ONLY THE RECOMMENDED CLEANING AND DISINFECTING AGENTS. THE LENS OF THE AV-2000 IS HARD COATED TO RESIST ABRASION, DO NOT USE A VAPOR POLISHER. DO NOT AUTOCLAVE THE AV-2000 FACEPIECE DO NOT POLISH THE LENS WITH PAPER TOWELS; MOST PAPER TOWELS CONTAIN ABRASIVES. AVOID ABRASIVE CLEANERS, ACETONE, PAINT AND LAQUER THINNERS, BENZENE, DRY-CLEANING FLUID, STRONG PHENOL, AND CRESOL SOLUTIONS.

45 CLEAN THE MASK AS FOLLOWS
THE AV-2000 IS NORMALLY CLEANED AND INSPECTED AFTER EACH USE. CAREFULLY INSPECT FACEPIECE AND HEAD HARNESS FOR AGING RUBBER PARTS, AND WORN, DAMAGED, MISSING OR LOOSE COMPONENTS. IF DEFECTIVE OR MISSING COMPONENTS ARE FOUND, EITHER REPLACE THEM IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE APPROPRIATE SECTION OF THE MANUAL, OR REMOVE THE FACEPIECE FROM SERVICE AND TAG FOR REPAIR.

46 CLEAN THE MASK AS FOLLOWS
NOTE: THE NOSECLIP AND HEAD HARNESS DO NOT REQUIRE REMOVAL DURING NORMAL CLEANING. IF REMOVAL OF THESE COMPNENTS IS DESIRED, SEE: SECTION 2 OF THE MANUAL FOR REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT OF THE NOSECUP ASSEMBLY AND INHALATION VALVES, SECTION 3 FOR REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT OF VOICEMITTER, AND SECTION 4 FOR REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT OF THE HEAD HARNESS ASSEMBLY.

47 CLEAN THE MASK AS FOLLOWS
CAREFULLY WASH THE FACEPIECE ASSEMBLY USING ONE OF THE FOLLLOWING METHODS: WASH WITH WARM (110°F MAXIMUM) MILD SOAP OR DETERGENT SOLUTION THOROUGHLY RINSE IN CLEANWATER. TO DISINFECT, SPONGE FACEPIECE WITH 70% SOLUTION OF ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL.

48 CLEAN THE MASK AS FOLLOWS
OR; CLEAN AND DISINFECT USING SCOTT MULTI-WASH MINI. FOLLOW INSTRUCTION SUPPLIED WITH SCOTT MULTI-WASH MINI. NOTE: THE KEVLAR AND NYLON HEAD HARNESSES ARE MADE OF PORUS MATERIAL. SCOTT MULTI-WASH MINI MAY NOT BE EFFECTIVE ON PORUS MATERIAL

49 CLEAN THE MASK AS FOLLOWS
THOROUGHLY RINSE WITH DRINKING WATER USING A SPRAY BOTTLE OR SOFTLY RUNNING WATER. SHAKE EXCESS WATER OFF AND THEN DRY WITH A CLEAN, LINT FREE CLOTH OR GENTLY BLOW DRY WITH CLEAN, DRY BREATHING AIR OF 30 PSIG OR LESS PRESSURE. DO NOT USE SHOP AIR OR ANY OTHER AIR CONTAINING LUBRICANTS OR MOISTURE.

50 CHECK YOUR WORK! CAREFULLY INSPECT FACEPIECE AND HEAD HARNESS FOR AGING RUBBER PARTS, AND ALSO FOR WORN, DAMAGED, MISSING OR LOOSE COMPONENTS. DO NOT USE THE FACEPIECE IF COMPONENTS ARE WORN, DAMAGED, MISSING OR LOOSE. REMOVE THE FACEPIECE FROM SERVICE AND TAG FOR REPAIR. FOLLOW THE APPROPRIATE SECTION OF THE MANAUL FOR PART REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT.

51 B. Washing & Disinfecting
Before disinfecting the BioPak 240, make sure the outside of the BioPak 240 is clean, so that the inside of the breathing gas loop is not contaminated. Clean the harness and exterior parts of the BioPak with a sponge and a mild soap solution, then wipe dry. a. Remove the facemask and hoses from the BioPak 240 by unscrewing the hose couplings. b. Prepare a disinfecting solution by adding 1packet of Quatsyl-256 Disinfectant agent (B ) per a gallon of warm water (90°-100°F, 32°-38°C). The packet and its contents must fully dissolve in the water. Only Quatsyl-256 may be used. DO NOT USE ALCOHOL OR CHLORINE AS A GERMICIDE; THEY CAN DETERIORATE LENS AND RUBBER PARTS.

52 B. Washing & Disinfecting
c. First clean the facemask, hoses, breathing chamber lid, and coolant canister with disinfectant. These parts may be immersed in the disinfectant, and then rinsed d. Rinse all of the above items with fresh water several times and allow them to air dry or carefully blow dry them with a portable hair dryer on the "cool" setting. e. Pour approximately 1 quart (or 1 liter) of disinfecting solution through the short Coolant Canister hose. Capping the end of the tube with your hand, move the tube up and down to thoroughly coat the inside of the tube and its corrugations with disinfectant. Allow the disinfectant to flow into the Breathing Chamber.

53 B. Washing & Disinfecting
f. Repeat previous step using the Exhalation Hose. Take care to protect the Flow Restrictor Assembly from getting wet. Minerals in water can deposit on the Flow Restrictor and can severely limit its flow. Use a finger cot (B ) to protect the top of the Flow Restrictor. g. Rotate the BioPak 240 several times to agitate the solution in the Breathing Chamber, thoroughly coating its top, bottom and sides. You should see bubbles of disinfectant appear in the vents around the edge of the Breathing Chamber. h. Pour the solution out of the Breathing Chamber. i. Repeat Steps (e) through (g) using fresh water rinse. Repeat rinse second time. Allow to air dry, or carefully dry with a portable hair dryer on the "cool" setting. Immerse the Absorbent Canister, Absorbent Canister Sponge Filter, and the Absorbent Canister Lid in the disinfectant. Wait until all other components are sanitized so that any absorbent dust left in the canister does not get onto the other parts of the BioPak. Be sure to squeeze disinfectant through the sponge filter.

54 B. Washing & Disinfecting
k. Repeat step (j) using a fresh water rinse. l. Examine the facemask and hoses for cuts or other damage. m. Check off "WASHING/DISINFECTING" on the BioPak 240 TURNAROUND MAINTENANCE tag.

55 c. Oxygen Cylinder Replacement
Remove the Oxygen Cylinder. WARNING: Always allow a minimum of 30 seconds after closing the cylinder valve for the system to bleed down before disengaging the oxygen cylinder. Pressing the Bypass Valve to relieve the pressure may quickly bleed the system down. a) Disengage the oxygen cylinder from the regulator yoke assembly.

56 Install the Oxygen Cylinder
a. Install a new oxygen cylinder or refill the cylinder just removed. The cylinder is supplied with a standard medical valve (requiring a CGA 870 yoke) and can be refilled where medical oxygen cylinders are filled. A transfill valve (B ) is available from Biomarine or its local distributor for alternative refilling methods. Reference Appendix A, “Oxygen Cylinder Filling Procedure.” b. Make sure the Stat-O-Seal is clean, Dry, Free of any contaminants, and is seated properly on the regulator assembly. c. Make sure that the valve assembly of the oxygen cylinder is CLEAN OF ANY LUBRICANT AND DIRT. Insert the valve assembly of the oxygen cylinder through the regulator assembly.

57 Install the Oxygen Cylinder
d. While supporting the bottom of the cylinder with your hand, seat the valve assembly of the oxygen cylinder on the regulator assembly. e. Carefully tighten the yoke screw that holds the oxygen cylinder to the regulator. Make certain the pointed end of the Yoke Screw is seated in the dimple on the cylinder's valve stem. f. Tighten the Velcro strap on the oxygen cylinder.

58 Install the Oxygen Cylinder
g. Open the valve on the cylinder. If a leak is heard, repeat steps (b) through (f). If the cylinder continues to leak at the regulator, replace the Stat-O-Seal (B ) h. Hold the BioPak 240 upright, shake unit vigorously. i. Verify the whistle “chirp” if cylinder leaks, tighten yoke screw and/or repeat steps (b) through (g).

59 j. Make certain oxygen cylinder is completely turned off for storage.
k. Check off “OXYGEN CYLINDER REPLACEMENT” on the BioPak 240 TURN-AROUND MAINTENANCE tag.

60 D. Flow Test The oxygen constant flow is preset at the factory to 1.78 LPM at an oxygen cylinder pressure of at least 1500 PSIG. To check the flow: a. Remove the outer case cover, the Breathing Chamber Lid, and the C02 Absorbent Canister. This exposes the Flow Restrictor, which is the topside of the Demand Valve Assembly. b. Slip the BioPak Flowmeter (B ) over the Flow Restrictor. c. Using a wooden tongue depressor, hold the diaphragm away from the Demand Valve. d. Open the refilled oxygen cylinder valve and measure the flow. At 3000 PSIG (2400 PSIG for the BioPak 240PA), the flow should be at least 1.78 LPM at sea level, adjusted for the user's local geographic elevation. Typically the flow should be approximately 1.9 LPM with the cylinder at 3000 PSIG. If not, see the “Troubleshooting” Section of this manual. e. Check off “FLOW TEST” on the BioPak 240 TURN-AROUND MAINTENANCE tag.

61 E. Carbon Dioxide Absorbent Replacement
a. Use the disinfected and dried absorbent canister (unless the unit is being turned around for immediate reuse by the same operator) b. Using a LimePak keg (B ), refill the canister with absorbent (approximately 3.9 lbs. or 8.6 kg.) to the fill line indicated. Shake the canister back and forth on a tabletop to settle the granules and distribute the particles so that the surface is level with the fill line marking inside the canister. Add more LimePak if required.

E. Carbon Dioxide Absorbent IMPORTANT NOTE: DO NOT EXPOSE THE C02 ABSORBENT TO THE ATMOSPHERE FOR MORE THAN A TOTAL OF 1 HOUR DURING RECHARGING AND/OR SERVICING. IF A BIOPAK 240 HAS BEEN STORED FOR MORE THAN 1 YEAR, THE C02 ABSORBENT MUST BE REPLACED AND THE OXYGEN PRESSURE CHECKED IMPORTANT NOTE: THE LIMEPAK KEG HAS A SHELF LIFE OF FIVE (5) YEARS WHEN SEALED. THE KEG OF LIMEPAK HAS A SHELF LIFE OF ONLY ONE (1) YEAR AFTER THE SEAL ON THE KEG HAS BEEN BROKEN. MARK THE DATE OF OPENING ONTO THE TOP OF THE KEG WITH INDELIBLE MARKER WHEN A NEW KEG IS OPENED!

63 c. Check to make sure that the sponge filter is not compressed
c. Check to make sure that the sponge filter is not compressed. Remember that the sponge filter is used to keep the absorbent in place so that it does not shift and lead to “channeling.” Replace with a new sponge filter if the old filter is less than 1/8" of an inch thick over the absorbent or less than 1/32” of an inch at the edges (replace any filter that does not overlap the edge of the tray). Reinstall the filter, replace and lock the canister cover. The foam filter should push slightly through the holes in the stainless canister cover. If it does not, check the filter and add more LimePak. d. With the stainless cover down and locked, shake the absorbent canister hard. You should not hear movement of the absorbent. e. Press the canister into place in the well and replace the Breathing Chamber Cover. Insure that the 4 cover snaps engage properly. CAUTION: CRISTOLUBE (MCG-11) OR SILICONE (DOW-111) MAY BE USED ON THESE LARGE O-RINGS. DO NOT USE AN OIL BASED LUBRICANT. DO NOT USE DOW-111 ON IHGH PRESSURE OXYGEN LINES. Maintaining adequate lubrication on the large O-Rings will help assure proper performance and prevent premature failure. f. Check off “CARBON DIOXIDE ABSORBENT REPLACEMENT” on the BioPak 240 TURN-AROUND MAINTENANCE tag.

64 F. Reassemble the BioPak
a. Install coolant canister without insert (which is stored in the freezer). b. Reconnect all the hoses and place a cap plug in each open hose end, or connect the hoses together with the hose coupler (B ). WARNING: IT IS CRITICAL THAT THESE CAPS BE PUT IN THE HOSES OR THE COUPLER BE USED TO CONNECT BOTH HOSES. IF A HOSE REMAINS OPEN TO THE ATMOSPHERE, THE BIOPAK 240 CANNOT BE USED BECAUSE THE CARBON DIOXIDE ABSORBENT MAY BE EXPENDED. c. Replace the BioPak 240 cover, and return the unit to the carrying case or other safe place.

65 G. Anti-Fog Agent Application
a. Coat the inside of the facemask with the anti-fogging cloth (B ). b. Lightly buff the lens with a clean, soft cloth until it is clear enough to see through. Excessive buffing may diminish the anti-fog qualities. When properly buffed, enough Anti-fog should remain on the inside of the lens so that your finger will leave a slight streak if you wipe it across the lens. NOTE: THE PROPER APPLICATION OF ANTI-FOG AGENT IS CRITICAL TO THE OPEATION OF THE BIOPAK BECAUSE OF THE LONG DURATION OF ITS USE, THE BIOPAK 240 IS PRONE TO FOGGING. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT THE ANTI-FOG AGENT ALSO BE APPLIED BEFORE EACH USE. c. Check off “ANTI-FOG AGENT APPLICATION” on the BioPak 240 TURN-AROUND MAINTENANCE tag.

66 H. Coolant Canister Insert
a. Place the clean, disinfected, dry coolant canister insert in a deep freezer in a horizontal position for at least 8 hours at less than 15ºF (-10ºC). b. Check off “PLACE COOLANT CANISTER IN FREEZER” on the BioPak 240 TURN-AROUND MAINTENANCE tag.

67 I. Turn-Around Maintenance Tag
a. Make sure that all the boxes are checked off on the BioPak 240 TURN-AROUND MAINTENANCE tag: WASHING/DISINFECTING OXYGEN CYLINDER REPLACEMENT FLOW TEST CARBON DIOXIDE ABSORBENT REPLACEMENT ANTI-FOGGING AGENT APPLICATION PLACE COOLANT CANISTER IN FREEZER b. Sign and date the Turn-Around Maintenance Tag. c. Secure the Turn-Around Maintenance Tag, which comes with each keg Of C02 Absorbent (B ), to the oxygen cylinder valve.
