1 Cell Structure and Function
Chapter 7 Objective: Identify the particular structures that underlie the cellular functions Skill Statement: Identify organelles and other cellular structures within plant and animal cells

2 Life is Cellular The cell- a common structure that makes up every living thing Cell theory All living things are composed of cells Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in living things New cells are produced from existing cells

3 Basic Cell structure Cells come in many shapes and sizes
Despite differences in cell size and shape, certain structures are common to most cells Cell membrane A thin flexible barrier around the cell A lipid bilayer Support and protect the cell, allows for interaction with the surroundings Cell wall A strong layer around the cell membrane Nucleus A large structure that contains the cells genetic material Controls the cell’s activities Cytoplasm Jelly-like material inside the cell membrane Contains important structures

4 List the numbers 1-10 on a paper
Get a microscope and go through each of the 10 slides. Write down your observations for each slide and include a detailed description- are there parts you see? What does it look like? Make a small sketch of each slide Make 2 columns on your paper and sort each slide number into a category of your choosing

5 Using the variety of pictures make
Detailed observations of the physical characteristics Separate the cell pictures into groups Write down your observations State your reasoning behind the formation of the groups Are there any similarities between the slides and the pictures? Why or why not? Review the slides and debate on the physical characteristics of each cell used to categorize them into two categories. (6) Once a common definition of prokaryote is created: simple, small, no nucleus, no organelles, first cell and eukaryotic: complex, large, nucleus, organelles and true cell. Use those terms to show students 10 new slides on the smart board/ppt presentation. Have students using their definition determine if these new and unknown slides are prokaryotic or eukaryotic. Optional--use an electronic response system to formatively assess if students can recognize the difference between these two different types of cells. (7) Conclusion--have students hypothesize what type of organisms are prokaryotic and eukaryotic--give them 2-3 minutes. Have students share out, the realization or goal is that only bacteria are prokaryotic and everything else is eukaryotic.

6 Cell Types There are 2 categories of cells Prokaryote and Eukaryote
Small and simple, unicellular- but still carry out activities for life: grow, reproduce, move, and respond to changes Cell membrane and cytoplasm No nucleus Bacteria Eukaryote Large and multicellular Nucleus Other specialized structures called organelles- perform cellular functions Plants, Animals, fungi, many microorganisms

7 Compare prokaryotes and eukaryotes by listing the features of each

8 Concept Sort Main Concepts Cells- yellow Basic cell structures-green
Prokaryote-orange Eukaryote-blue write what you understand or ask a question about each concept on the appropriate color

9 CAROUSEL Send your work around to another student
Provide constructive feedback- make suggestions
